Sri Lanka eye historic win in South Africa

Kumar Sangakkara hit a superbly-crafted century on the third day of the second Test match against South Africa at Kingsmead on Wednesday and put Sri Lanka in a strong position to ?close out the game?.

Sangakkara?s 108 enabled Sri Lanka to reach 256 for seven in their second innings - an overall lead of 426, eight runs more than the highest successful run chase in Test history.

The left-handed former captain shared stands of 94 with Thilan Samaraweera and 104 with rookie wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal as Sri Lanka went in search of their first win of the year - and their first in four Test tours of South Africa.

Sangakkara admitted the Sri Lankans had been stung by criticism of their performance when they were beaten by an innings and 81 runs in the first Test at Centurion.

?Comments can inspire sides and pressure can make sides rise to the occasion,? he said.

?We proved we have the ability to counter attack and get into winning positions. But the match is still not over. We put ourselves in a great position. Our job now is to make sure we close the match out.?

South African coach Gary Kirsten said his team?s poor batting performance in the first innings, when they were bowled out for 168, had put them ?in a hole?.

But he refused to write off South Africa?s chances.

?I?m still quite excited by what can happen,? he said. ?There is a great opportunity for someone to be a hero for his country.?

Both Sangakkara and Kirsten said the pitch remained good for batting and Sangakkara said Sri Lanka wanted to stretch their lead.

?Our target now is to get as many as we can in front of the South Africans and then make them work really hard to save the game,? he said.

Sangakkara, whose first three innings in the series were 1, 2 and 0, had not added to his overnight score of three when he edged the fourth ball of the morning, from Morne Morkel, towards Graeme Smith at first slip. Wicketkeeper Mark Boucher dived for the ball, obscuring Smith?s vision, and the South African captain put down the chance.

Sangakkara made the home side pay as he constructed a classy innings in overcast and gloomy conditions. Overnight and morning rain delayed the start by an hour and the floodlights were on during most of the day.

Sangakkara reached his fifty off 102 balls with four fours and then took command, scoring his second fifty off only 59 deliveries, adding nine more boundaries. It was his 28th Test century.

?I had to work quite hard in the nets after my first three innings,? he said. ?It was a case of going back to the basics and watching the ball a lot better.?

First innings century-maker Samaraweera shared a crucial fourth wicket stand with Sangakkara after the first three wickets had fallen for 44 runs to give South Africa hope of bowling themselves back into contention despite trailing by 170 runs on the first innings.

Samaraweera made 43 before being deceived by a googly from Imran Tahir which he edged into his stumps.

Sri Lanka pressed home their advantage as Sangakkara and new cap Chandimal scored at almost a run a minute. Chandimal followed up his first innings 58 with 54 and earned high praise from Sangakkara.

?He was so impressive in this game, making his debut, getting twin fifties, batting in difficult conditions and building partnerships to get us into dominant positions.

?He showed that with a lot of hard work he can make quite an impact for us, batting at seven and keeping wicket.?

Anonymous Hackers Still Active, Closing 2011 with a Bang (NewsFactor)

Anonymous struck again on Monday morning -- and the backlash by the infamous hacking group may not be over yet. Anonymous, which took down Strategic Forecasting's Web site over the weekend, has vowed to strike again. This time, the targets are Stratfor members who are speaking out to support the firm.

As a result of the hack, Stratfor said it has reason to believe the names of its private corporate subscribers have been posted on other Web sites. Its Web site remained down Tuesday afternoon. The last update from Stratfor was Sunday night.

Stratfor sees the hack as retaliation for the treatment of Pfc. Bradley Manning, an Army intelligence analyst charged with leaking more than 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables to the WikiLeaks Web site. WikiLeaks posted many of the cables.

Global Clients Compromised

"It's come to our attention that our members who are speaking out in support of us on Facebook may be being targeted for doing so and are at risk of having sensitive information repeatedly published on other Web sites," the company wrote on its Facebook page. "So, in order to protect yourselves, we recommend taking security precautions when speaking out on Facebook or abstaining from it altogether."

The firm said it was diligently investigating the issue. The data is of an especially sensitive nature, considering Stratfor is a global intelligence firm that deals in business, economic, security and geopolitical affairs. Clients include the U.S. Department of Defense, Lockheed Martin, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Doctors Without Borders and Bank of America.

"Anonymous keeps doing this because it works, and that's part of the problem," said Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research. "PayPal has been the No. 1 target." Anonymous gained fame last year when it issued a hit list of Web sites hostile to WikiLeaks, including PayPal, Visa and MasterCard.

Anonymous Backlash

Kerravala is correct. Anonymous attacks work in that they disrupt the business world, but authorities are beginning to find success cracking down on Anonymous members. The first major arrest was made by Dutch police in Dec. 2010 in conjunction with the cyberattacks to protest shutdown of financial contributions to WikiLeaks.

In June, Spanish police celebrated the arrest of three men who allegedly were part of the computer hacking group that launched cyberattacks against Sony's PlayStation Network, among others. Authorities in Turkey, Australia and Great Britain have also made arrests of alleged Anonymous members. But the Anonymous arrests haven't stopped the attacks. Indeed, 2011 saw the rise of hacktivism on many fronts.

Paul Henry, a security analyst at Lumension, told NewsFactor one year ago today that the world hadn't heard the last of WikiLeaks. On Dec. 27, 2011 he said he expected the impact of WikiLeaks to expand well beyond simply embarrassing governments, to releasing data that would cause harm to big-business reputations.

He was right. Despite the fact that its funding has been largely strangled, WikiLeaks continues to be a force to be reckoned with, even if it's only through the attacks of groups like Anonymous.

Scott Johnson to become Scotland coach under Andy Robinson after announcing decision to quit Ospreys

Robinson said: "I am delighted Scott has agreed to join the Scotland coaching team. I have huge respect for him as a coach and a person having coached against him on numerous occasions."

Johnson is eager to embrace the prospect of a return to the international game, although he will have to wait until after the RBS 6 Nations to have a hands-on role.

He said: "I'm excited by this challenge. Scotland is a country with a great history in rugby and with Andy there's a real focus point to get it back to where it belongs on the world stage by creating something new and brighter."

Scottish Rugby chief executive Mark Dodson explained the role Johnson plays will not be restricted to drills on the rugby field.

Dodson said: "I believe this is a significant appointment for Scottish Rugby.

"In addition to working with Andy and the national management team, we are finalising an important wider role for Scott in helping us to better identify Scottish-qualified talent around the world."

The Ospreys were Heineken Cup quarter-finalists and Magners League champions during Johnson's first full season in charge.

Although they are again well placed in this season's domestic league, a Heineken Cup pool stage exit beckons next month following home and away defeats against English champions Saracens.

Explaining his departure, Johnson said: "I feel that now is the right time for me to move on to other challenges, but I remain 100 per cent committed to the Ospreys between now and the end of the season."

Johnson informed Ospreys directors of his decision ahead of yesterday's Welsh derby defeat against the Scarlets.

Ospreys chief operations officer Andrew Hore described Johnson's departure as "a huge disappointment".

Hore added: "He will be sadly missed by everybody at the Ospreys when he moves on, but by informing us of his intentions at this early stage, it allows us to use this time to consider our next course of action and the options available to us as we plan for the future."

The Ospreys saw three of their Wales internationals - Mike Phillips, James Hook and Lee Byrne - move to French club rugby earlier this year, but under Johnson's guidance, promising young players have continued to be discovered and developed.

Ospreys managing director Roger Blyth said: "The work he has put in over the last three years will ensure that the Ospreys continue to be known as a centre of excellence in development terms."

'Twilight' Pop Culture Parodies: Celebrating The Year's Best

We look back at videos that got the 'Twilight' treatment in this week's 'Twilight' Tuesday.
By Kara Warner

In the spirit of the season of giving and spreading holiday cheer, this week's "Twilight" Tuesday is all about the gifts we've received via several higher-profile "Twilight" parodies that were prevalent in pop culture this year. With four films having been unleashed upon the masses to date, there is more than enough material to work with, and you know what they say about imitation: It's the highest form of flattery.

Without further ado, here are the best videos that got the "Twilight" treatment in 2011, plus a couple old-school standouts that are always worth revisiting.

Auto-Tuned at the Oscars
The Academy wasn't subtle about trying to lure younger viewers for the 83rd annual Oscars telecast when they signed on co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway, and that was even more apparent when a musical mash-up was introduced that featured short Auto-Tuned videos from the year's most popular films. The "Twilight" moment arrived toward the end of the video in a little ditty titled "He Doesn't Own a Shirt," which featured that infamous scene in "Eclipse" wherein Edward scoffs at Jacob's impossibly toned abs and asks Bella why the werewolf never wears shirts.

Nickelodeon's Fred Figglehorn Does "Twilight"
Speaking of shirtlessness, in Nickelodeon's "Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred," Internet celeb Fred Figglehorn showed off his own set of impressive abs in a kooky Jacob vs. Volturi-type scene. In this setup, Fred/Jacob has a squeaky high-pitched voice and instead of turning into a wolf, he morphs into a Pomeranian.

"Breaking Prawn" With the Muppets
We can all agree that the marketing campaign for "The Muppets" was brilliant. After taking on the likes of "Green Lantern" and "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" via parody trailers, our favorite fuzzy friends spoofed "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" with their "Breaking Prawn" clip and three equally clever posters advertising "The Muppet Saga" that featured Kermit as "Vamphibian," Miss Piggy as "Bella Swine" and Rowlf as "WereRowlf."

Bonus #1: Jimmy Kimmel's "Friggin' Twilight"
Yes, this video arrived in 2010, but because it stars our very own colorful characters from "Jersey Shore," it's too good not to mention here. This little gem first aired during Kimmel's talk show and featured Snooki as Bella, The Situation as Edward, JWoww as Alice, Vinnie as Tyler Crowley, Pauly D as Jacob, Ronnie and Sammy as Cullens/Volturi, and a cameo by "Shore" cast-off Angelina as evil Victoria. Most ridiculous moments involve The Sitch's sparkling abs and Pauly D's stringy werewolf facial hair.

Bonus #2: "SNL" Digital Short "Firelight"
Leave it to the kings of pop culture mockery at "Saturday Night Live" and pop star princess Taylor Swift to create a killer "Twilight" parody. In the 2009 Digital Short "Firelight," guest host Swift did a spot-on Kristen Stewart impression, complete with repeated lip biting and multiple hair-behind-the-ear moves, all while quoting actual lines from "Twilight." However, in this case the Edward character is not a vampire, he's the big, green, clumsy, strangle-happy monster Frankenstein.

What "Twilight" moments did we miss? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me at @KaraWarner with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

Poll: Most Americans want payroll tax extension

Chart shows results of opinion polls on Congress

Chart shows results of opinion polls on Congress

(AP) ? Most Americans want Congress to vote to continue the payroll tax reduction, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll that comes as Democrats and Republicans wrestle over whether to extend the cut through 2012.

It's the latest instance in which lawmakers on Capitol Hill have allowed partisan sniping to hold up a measure to put in place a policy that most Americans support, like ending the Bush tax cuts, cap and trade, and a surcharge on millionaires.

The dragged-out debate over whether to extend an expiring payroll tax reduction is one of many developments that have kept voters furious with their leaders all year. On the brink of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections, virtually all Americans are disappointed and frustrated with the political scene and nearly 6 in 10 say they are angry, the AP-GfK survey showed.

"It seems like there are parties that only want to get their agenda done," said liquor store owner James Jacobsen, 47, of East Hartford, Conn. "They're catering to special interests and not Americans. They are not representing the individual American."

Nearly 6 in 10 respondents say they want Congress to pass the extension, according to the poll. Letting the payroll tax break expire would cost a family making $50,000 about $1,000.

Yet, Republicans and Democrats are rejecting each other's proposals and trying to make law from what's left, a tactic they've used all year on debates over the budget and the nation's debt. The stalemates have caused a decline in confidence so severe that 15 percent of all adults and 32 percent of political independents say they don't trust either party to manage the federal budget deficit.

Economic discontent has spilled over into the political sphere all year and could influence the 2012 presidential and congressional elections. Occupy Wall Street and other protests against inequality have grabbed some attention from politicians, with Democrats the most supportive. Last week, a group of demonstrators camped out on the National Mall, crashed stately holiday parties and marched on Capitol Hill, demanding that Congress extend the payroll tax and insurance for the long-term unemployed.

On the payroll tax deduction, 58 percent of respondents said they want Congress to extend the break, while 35 percent want it to expire.

Democrats and independents are the strongest supporters of continuing the tax cut, while Republicans were evenly divided. But the difference is more partisan than ideological: Conservatives supported an extension, 54 percent to the 42 percent who prefer to let the reduction expire.

Those with annual incomes below $50,000 more strongly support the extension compared with higher-income respondents, and seniors were more likely than younger adults to back the extension.

On Wednesday, there was little sign Congress was listening.

Democrats who control the Senate rejected a GOP-ruled House plan to extend the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits, but only with cuts to spending and sped-up approval of an oil pipeline. The Senate is crafting its own proposal in response.

If an agreement is not reached by the end of the year, payroll taxes will jump on Jan. 1 from this year's 4.2 percent back to their normal level of 6.2 percent.

Americans are virtually out of patience, the polling shows. And their distrust crosses party lines.

"I really don't feel that they are having the best interests of us as a people," said Rogersville, Tenn., resident Andrea Stafford, 38, a single mother of two who has been unemployed since the summer.

"And when I say people," she added, "I don't mean millionaires and government officials. I'm talking about the normal person who gets up and fixes their children's lunch and has to take off work when their child is sick because we don't have nannies."

The AP-GfK poll found congressional approval near its all-time low and nearly all Americans disappointed with politics. Eighty-four percent of the respondents disapproved of the way Congress is doing its job, with at least 8 in 10 Republicans, Democrats and independents feeling that way.

As for how to balance the federal budget, more now favor cutting government services as the best means to bring federal spending into balance. Sixty percent think lawmakers should focus on budget cuts over tax increases. That figure had been as low as 53 percent in August, during the showdown over raising the country's debt limit.

The biggest shift on that question has come from independents. In the August poll, 37 percent said lawmakers should focus on increasing taxes and 42 percent said cutting services. Now, that divide stands at 28 percent for raising taxes and 59 percent for cutting services.

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted Dec. 8-12 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,000 adults nationwide and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

US finds some abuses by Afghan village police (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? A U.S. military investigation has found American-trained Afghan village police forces have committed some human rights abuses and has made recommendations on how to eliminate them.

An executive summary, to be released later Thursday, also found the program was effective in providing security in areas where the army and police could not. It called for closer cooperation with human rights groups so the Afghan government could act more quickly when abuses are reported.

The informal investigation was ordered by the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, after the New York-based Human Rights Watch issued a report that alleged that some units of the Afghan Local Police were committing abuses ? including rape and murder.
