'30 Rock': Bryan Cranston and Catherine O'Hara fill in Kenneth's ...

catherine-ohara-bryan-cranston-30-rock-gi.jpgWe've been to Kenneth Parcell's hometown on "30 Rock," but we've never met other members of his family (aside from cousin Clay Aiken).

That will change in the show's final season. Catherine O'Hara ("Best in Show," "Temple Grandin") will guest-star on the series as Kenneth's (Jack McBrayer) mother, and "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston will play her "friend" Ron, TV Guide reports.

Kenneth and Hazel (Kristen Schaal) will be involved in a "non-sexual" relationship at the start of the season, "30 Rock" creator/star Tina Fey tells the magazine. She doesn't spill any details about how mom and Ron come into the story, but perhaps Kenneth thinks it's time for Hazel to meet the family?

We do know this: Kenneth loves his mother even more than he loves everyone else, and Ron was not kind to him after Kenneth's father died. Which should make for some interesting dynamics when we finally meet them.

"30 Rock" begins its final season on Oct. 4. Check Zap2it's premiere calendar for all the fall debuts.

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Want To Lose Weight ...

US researchers working on a study comparing approaches to weight loss,
found that keeping a food diary can double weight loss as part of a
managed programme; they said that the more food records
they kept, the more weight the participants lost.

The study was carried out by investigators from Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research, and is to be published in the August issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The study is one of the largest and longest running weight loss maintenance trials ever conducted, wrote the researchers in a press statement, and is also unique in that a large number of participants (44 per cent) were African Americans who are known to have higher risks for diseases that are made worse by being overweight, such as heart disease and diabetes.

Those who kept regular and frequent food records tended to lose more weight, said lead author Dr Jack Hollis, a researcher at Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon, adding that:

"Those who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records. It seems that the simple act of writing down what you eat encourages people to consume fewer calories."

The trial, known as the Weight Loss Maintenance (WLM) trial, was a a randomized trial conducted at four centers to compare different approaches to maintaining weight loss over a period of 30 months. The August paper describes the results from Phase I, the first 6 months of the trial.

1,685 overweight or obese (Body Mass Index or BMI in range 25 to 45 kg/m2) participants aged 25 and over and who were taking blood pressure and/or antidyslipidemia medication (eg cholesterol busters) took part in 20 weekly group sessions to encourage them to restrict their calorie intake, take part in daily moderate to intense physical exercise for half an hour a day, and modify their diet according to the DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) guidelines. The participants were also encouraged to keep daily records of their calorie intake.

After six months, the results showed that:

  • 44 per cent of the participants were African American, 67 per cent were women, and 79 per cent were obese (BMI of 30 or more).

  • 87 per cent were taking blood pressure medication and 38 per cent antidyslipidemia medication (eg cholesterol busters).

  • An average of 72 per cent of the participants attended 20 group sessions.

  • The average reported amount of time spent in moderate to intense physical exercise was 117 minutes a week (nearly 2 hours).

  • On average the participants kept 3.7 daily food records a week, and consumed 2.9 servings of fruit and vegetables a day.

  • The average weight loss among all the participants was about 13 pounds (5.9 kilos).

  • More than two-thirds (69 per cent) of them lost at least 9 pounds (4.1 kilos).

  • This was enough to reduce health risks and qualify them for Phase II, which lasted 30 months and tested different approaches to maintaining the weight loss.

  • All race and gender subgroups lost significant amounts of weight.

  • Among African Americans, the average weight loss among men was 11.9 pounds (5.4 kilos) and among women it was 9 pounds (4.1 kilos).

  • Among non-African Americans, the average weight loss among men was 18.7 pounds (8.5 kilos) and among women it was 12.8 pounds (5.8 kilos).

  • Behaviour such as diet records and physical activity accounted for most of the variation in weight loss, although these links differed by race and gender.
The authors concluded that the weight loss programme:

"Successfully achieved clinically significant short-term weight loss in a diverse population of high-risk patients."

More than two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, said co-author and Kaiser Permanente researcher, Dr Victor Stevens.

"If we all lost just nine pounds, like the majority of people in this study did, our nation would see vast decreases in hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke," he added.

In an earlier study, Stevens found that even a 5 pound (2.3 kilos) loss of weight was enough to reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure by 20 per cent.

The Weight Management Initiative from Kaiser Permanente's Care Management Institute has been recommending food journals as part of weight loss maintenance since 2002. The Initiative brings together clinicians, researchers, insurers, and policymakers to work out effective and practical, non-surgical ways to prevent and treat overweight and obesity.

Dr Keith Bachman, a member of the Weight Management Initiative, said that the food diary doesn't have to be a formal thing:

"Just the act of scribbling down what you eat on a Post-It note, sending yourself e-mails tallying each meal, or sending yourself a text message will suffice."

He said the value was the fact that writing it down makes you reflect on what you are eating, which makes us more aware of our habits and gives us a better chance that we will change our behaviour.

"Every day I hear patients say they can't lose weight," said Bachman, but "this study shows that most people can lose weight if they have the right tools and support".

"And food journaling in conjunction with a weight management program or class is the ideal combination of tools and support," he added.

"Weight Loss During the Intensive Intervention Phase of the Weight-Loss Maintenance Trial."

Chef Alfred Portale on 28 Years of Gotham Bar and Grill - Eater ...

If you've walked by Gotham Bar and Grill, chances are you've noticed a series of New York Times reviews from over the years hanging in the window. They're all three-spots. Despite the fact that he's considered a pioneer of modern American cooking, the man largely responsible for those accolades, chef Alfred Portale, doesn't really attribute those successes to virtuosity or creativity. Instead, he points to the importance of consistency and understanding the stakes involved when operating a large New York City restaurant as the most vital factors. In the following interview, Portale analyzes Gotham over the years, his personality as a chef and businessman, the evolution of restaurant culture and criticism, and his plans for the future.

Who do you think your audience is at Gotham?
I don't really know, actually. I don't know who these people are. I know we get a lot of young people. This year it was a great looking, energetic crowd, I can tell you that.

Is there a type of diner you wish was more interested in the restaurant?
Yes, definitely. Over the years, our demand for late night reservations has waned somewhat. There's probably a number of reasons for that. For one, I think we're perceived as being more expensive than we once were. I've always priced and designed the menu so that we would provide a lot of value. 25 years ago, we had entrees that were between $25 and $35, and now we have entrees that are $30 to $48. Our prices and check averages have gone up, but our food costs have remained the same. For whatever reason, though, we don't get the late night crowd that we used to. We're not doing less covers, though.

The question of price actually came up in the last Sam Sifton review, which praised the restaurant but pointed to the fact that it's expensive.
It isn't an inexpensive restaurant, but we put a lot on the plate and deliver a lot of value. It's also very labor intensive. Because we've been around a while, maybe we're perceived as being expensive and special occasion. We're not seen as the hip place with the late night bar scene, although on the weekends and the fourth quarter of the year it gets close to that.

Speaking of the reviews: you look at that panel outside with however many three-star reviews from the Times, and it suggests this almost ridiculous stability. Have there been dips or periods of crisis for the restaurant?
I think what I'll say is that it has always been a lot of work. I can honestly say that in all of our years, I truly believe that the restaurant has gotten better in one area or another, whether it's the wine, the service, or the food, or something else. It has gotten better every single year. I can't point to any single year and say it was a down period. You can look at other restaurants that have been around for a while and see periods where they dip and then refocus. That has never happened to us.

Why do you think you've been able to achieve that without getting bored or letting other challenges that naturally come up in life get in the way?
It's a lot to do with my personality, I think. I think that what Gotham represents ? it's a big, busy restaurant that does many millions of dollars in sales in a crazy restaurant city ? is not something to be trifled with. As with any business, you want to keep your eye on it. I focus on it every day and I love cooking and I love what I do. I love Gotham too much to not care every day.

I don't take things for granted. I don't believe so much in luck. There are a couple of ways to succeed: you can either be more creative, smarter, brilliant, more artistic than anyone else, or you can simply have some of those things and work harder than everybody.

You'd put yourself in the latter category, it seems.
That's kind of the working thesis for me. This business is just so fleeting. It's always frightened me that for us to be successful on any given day, I have to rely on so many people: my purchaser, my purveyors, my prep guys. If they screw up, I'm fucked. If the reservationists make a mistake or aren't aggressive or aren't confirming tables, we'll have a shitty night with a lot of no-shows. To rely on so many people is a little frightening, so it drives me to really stay focused. I can't just chill and lay back, ever.

Shifting gears, what would you say is New American cuisine?
It depends on whom you ask.

Do you like the term?
Not really. I don't totally dislike it, but as you just brought up, what does it mean? I prefer to say that what we are doing here is modern American. What I've always done is draw from history and in some cases, modernize.

One of the reasons that we became successful and stayed successful was figuring out ? and this is definitely not unique now ? that you could have first-class food, informed service, a super wine list, and a nice environment with absolutely no pretension. In the early days of Gotham, the only great restaurants were the three and four star French restaurants where the captains were formal and you were treated like shit. I didn't want that.

Now, of course, Danny [Meyer] really popularized that concept, but we were doing it before. Eight months before, to be exact [laughs]. He used to live upstairs and used to hang out while they were building Union Square. He's a good friend and a good neighbor.

As a young chef, what made you consider taking that rather bold direction?
It mainly came from my experiences in France.

You worked at Guerard, right?
Guerard and Troisgros. Troisgros is like a family-owned restaurant, a hotel, and it was intense but also very jovial and friendly. We were welcomed to eat in the restaurant, for instance. Then I went to Guerard and got there a day before starting to work so that I could have dinner there. They told me I could not eat in the dining room. We had to come in through the workers' quarters and couldn't spend time in the guest areas. The food was amazing and I loved everything I learned there, but why did it have to be that way? Why does it have to be super formal? It's like that review of Le Cirque by Ruth Reichl, where she went to the restaurant, they didn't know who she was, and then treated her like shit. Then she went back, they knew who she was, and Sirio [Maccioni] was like, "The Queen of Spain is sitting at the bar, but your table is ready!"

It was a new idea back then to have a restaurant that defied that. When we got the first three-star review, everybody was super pissed. "Their waiters are wearing sneakers! How can they?"

And now it's normal for a place like that to be eligible for a great review.
Sometimes I disagree with some of the reviews in general these days, because it used to be that everything kind of weighed in in its relative importance ? the quality of the space, the glassware, the flowers, the menu, the service. It wasn't just about one thing. Now you can see restaurant reviews where it can be that the food is wonderful but everything else is lacking. That's not the fault of the chefs, but of the critics.

I don't want to pick any recent examples, but a good old example is Sushi Hatsu. I was there 100 times, because I lived around the corner. If you sat in front of the old man on the right side of the sushi bar, it was some of the best fish in the world. If you were anywhere else in the restaurant, it was not the same experience. I had eaten there 50 times, and every time, they'd pretend like they hadn't seen me before. They would give you different quality soy sauce and different chopsticks if you were sitting at a table and not the sushi bar. The chairs were banged up. It was a place I don't think I'd recommend to anyone, but the New York Times went in there and gave it three stars. That pissed me off.

Here's a rather pretentious question: the only other place you've opened is a steakhouse, and you've been here for nearly 30 years. Would you say your identity is fully linked to Gotham, or would you do something different if this place was taken away from you?
One might say that of course, because I've been here for 30 years and haven't opened anything aside from the steakhouse in Miami, that is the case. But I don't necessarily feel that way. If I closed Gotham tomorrow, I would roll out a different concept and do different cuisine. I would love to do that.

You have a style that you can't deviate too much from?
Yeah, exactly. I miss doing other concepts, because we have Gotham food. We will sometimes come up with dishes and nix them because they aren't Gotham.

Do you have plans to open new concepts, then?
Yes.

Can you talk about them?
No, not really [laughs].

What about the future of Gotham?
It is a constant challenge to keep the restaurant fresh and exciting. Not only do you have to do it internally, but you also have to think about promoting and marketing.

Does it ever become a burden or make you feel like you run the risk of doing something out of character to keep things fresh and relevant?
No, that never occurs to me. I'm really doing what I love to do, the way I want to do it. I don't feel like we need to do anything out of character to stay relevant. I remember getting this fancy jacket 15 years ago when we got a three-star review. It was cool at the time, and I can still wear it. There's one fundamental thing that's made us successful: delivering astonishing consistency.

Gambia on edge amid mass executions

Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh came under attack Tuesday for sending nine prisoners to the firing squad, leaving the tiny nation jittery as another 38 convicts await execution in the coming weeks.

The 47-year-old former soldier, who seized power in a 1994 coup, dismissed concerns expressed by the African Union and rights bodies that had urged him not to carry out his plans and executed a first batch of prisoners on Sunday night.

"We are absolutely dumbfounded by this news," said Alioune Tine of the Dakar-based African Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights.

"It is a case of madness at the head of a country, a paranoiac at the head of Gambia and that is dangerous for Africa," Tine said.

Calling for the "total isolation" of the Gambian leader, who often heaps derision on criticism from the West, Tine urged a halt to meetings of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights, which has its headquarters in Banjul.

Gambia's interior ministry announced Monday that nine death row prisoners had been executed by firing squad on Sunday night, a week after Jammeh vowed to carry out all death sentences by mid-September.

Two of those killed, one of them a woman, were Senegalese citizens, and Senegal's President Macky Sall said he "deeply regrets" the killings, in a statement from his spokesman.

"Macky Sall calls on Gambia to urgently suspend all executions," read the statement.

Another Senegalese citizen is still on death row in Gambia, which is surrounded by Senegal except for a strip of Atlantic coast.

Commonwealth spokesman Richard Uku said in a statement the executions were "a matter of grave concern" and urged the government of the former British colony, a member of the 54-state Commonwealth, to renounce its plans.

The European Union has also demanded "an immediate halt" to the executions.

Amnesty International estimates a further 38 prisoners are on death row.

"We are appalled that the Gambian authorities carried out the nine executions and urge them to ensure that no further executions take place," said Paule Rigaud, the rights group's deputy director for Africa.

Jammeh, who has woven an aura of mysticism around himself, dressing in billowing white robes and always clutching his Koran, is accused of ruling the tiniest nation on the African mainland with an iron fist, brooking no dissent.

The president's feared plain-clothes security officers could be seen on the streets of Banjul on Tuesday, and tension was palpable among citizens, who were afraid to talk about the executions lest they be recorded by his agents and punished.

In a televised address to mark this year's Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr, Jammeh said: "By the middle of next month, all the death sentences will have been carried out to the letter.

"There is no way my government will allow 99 percent of the population to be held to ransom by criminals."

The regime of the man who says he can cure AIDS is often pilloried for human rights abuses, enforced disappearances, extra-judicial killings, torture and muzzling journalists.

Many top officials have found themselves charged with treason, often related to coup plots which observers have said are a sign of paranoia by Jammeh, who won a fourth term in office in November 2011.

Last year eight military top brass, including the former army and intelligence chiefs and the ex-deputy head of the police force, were sentenced to death for treason.

Jammeh also regularly reshuffles top officials.

On Sunday night state television reported that Education Minister Mambury Nie had been sacked a week after being moved into the portfolio from the foreign ministry.

In the past few months former army chiefs, heads of the navy and presidential guard and other generals have been sacked and deployed as deputy ambassadors around the world.

Prior to Sunday, the last official execution in Gambia was in 1985 and Amnesty International had considered Gambia to be among the 22 of Africa's 54 states that had in practice abolished capital punishment.

The nation of 1.7 million people survives mostly off tourism, luring sun-worshipping Europeans to its sweeping, palm-fringed coastline, and agriculture.

Syria rebels dream of weapons to down aircraft

On the edge of the Saif al-Dawla district of Aleppo, a commander argues with a rebel. He has ordered him to try to take out a regime tank, alone and with a single rocket-propelled grenade.

"Just one is enough -- you can take out the whole army," the commander tells the reluctant fighter.

The scene is one repeated across the frontlines of the battle between the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian regime, as the rag-tag rebel forces try to take on tanks, helicopter gunships and fighter jets with armoury that is desperately lacking.

Rebel commanders say the weapons they do have -- Kalashnikovs, some RPGs, a handful of anti-aircraft guns -- are old and expensive while the weapons they need to take on the might of an army are impossible to come by.

"I flew MIG war planes for 12 years, and we are fighting these planes with Kalashnikovs, and not even good Kalashnikovs," says Alaa Saadeddin, a defected pilot.

"Anti-aircraft guns are the heaviest weapon we have," he adds. "We don't have ground-to-ground rockets, we don't have Grads, we don't have surface-to-air missiles."

When Abu Maryam decided to set up his own rebel brigade, he approached the Liwa al-Tawhid, a rebel umbrella group, to ask about the possibility of getting weapons.

"Liwa al-Tawhid gave us two Kalashnikovs, but we had to find a way to buy the rest. We have 22 men and 12 guns, so we will go in groups. The first group will take the guns, when they come back, they will give the guns to the second group."

And the weapons that are available don't come cheap -- a Kalashnikov goes for 150,000 Syrian pounds, nearly $2,400, bullets start at $2 each, and a grenade will set you back over $150, according to commanders.

Syria's rebels laugh at stories of Libyan fighters who regularly unloaded their weapons into the air to celebrate a victory on the battlefront.

"If any rebel in any group fires a single bullet in any direction other than at the enemy, they will be kicked out of the group," Saadeddin said.

Western nations have said they are providing non-lethal aid, in the form of money or communications equipment to the rebels, and the opposition Syrian National Council says countries including Saudi Arabia and Qatar have provided arms to fighters inside the country.

But the weapons in evidence on the ground look as old as rebels claim they are -- beaten-up guns and dusty RPGs that are a world away from the shiny new equipment that was in circulation on the Libyan battlefield.

"The vast majority of the weapons we have come from the regime, either we take them from the soldiers when we kill them, or we buy them from shabiha (pro-regime militiamen) or corrupt state army troops," said Abu Walid, a commander in the city of Marea.

"Take this grenade for example, we bought it from an Alawite soldier," he said, displaying a plump green grenade with Russian labelling.

"He loves money more than he loves his side," he sneered.

Rebels said they had also managed to buy some weapons over the border, mainly in Iraq, but also in Lebanon and to a lesser extent in Turkey.

Abu Walid and other commanders said their forces were in need of everything from ammunition to ground-to-ground missiles. But the weapon that the rebels dream of most is something that can take out a plane.

The Syrian army has rained destruction on Aleppo and its surroundings with its fleet of warplanes and helicopter gunships.

"When we say a neighbourhood has been liberated, it doesn't mean in the air, but only on the ground, because at any point a plane or helicopter can come (and strike) and we don't have rockets," said Abul Abbas, another Liwa al-Tawhid commander in Marea.

"The most important thing is to have a weapon that can take out a plane," Abu Walid added emphatically.

In the absence of anything heavier, rebels are working to make homemade devices, bombs and rockets.

But a group of three rebels who proudly shared a video showing the firing of what they said was a homemade rocket, admitted they had no way to aim the device and no idea where it lands.

"We've tried to make some homemade rockets, but honestly most of them have blown up in our faces," Saadeddin said.

In the Mashhad neighbourhood of Aleppo, as a tank round landed ever closer, a group of rebels found themselves armed with nothing more than their Kalashnikovs and Molotov cocktails made out of old pickle jars.

"That's the difference between us and them," one commander said of the Syrian army. "They have everything, we have nothing but God."

Samsung shares plunge after Apple patent ruling | The Raw Story

By Agence France-Presse
Monday, August 27, 2012 7:35 EDT

?

South Korea?s Samsung sought Monday to rally employees after a $1.05 billion US court judgment in favor of arch-rival Apple pushed its shares sharply lower amid fears about the fallout in the key American market.

Samsung shares tumbled 7.5 percent, the biggest single-day percentage drop the electronics giant has seen in nearly four years, after a California jury last week said the firm had infringed on half a dozen patents held by Apple.

Shares of other Asian smartphone makers which run Google?s Android operating system, the partial target of Apple?s lawsuit, were also lower.

Analysts said the fine was not a major issue for Samsung, the world?s biggest technology firm, but the jury verdict raised concerns about a possible ban on some US sales when the judge in the case makes her final ruling. This was expected on September 20 but could be delayed.

The jury in San Jose, California decided Friday that Samsung ?wilfully? infringed six Apple patents for smartphones or tablet PCs.

Samsung, in a blog message to staffers, said it was ?very disappointed? at the ruling ? part of a legal battle in nine countries between the two technology titans.

But the company, which has announced it would contest the verdict, said it would ?continue to do our utmost until our arguments have been accepted.?

Samsung said courts in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and Korea had previously ruled it had not copied Apple?s designs. Without naming its US rival, it decried the ?outright abuse? of patent law.

?We trust that the consumers and the market will side with those who prioritise innovation over litigation, and we will prove this beyond doubt.?

Analysts said the judge could later decide to triple the damages because jurors found Samsung acted ?wilfully?, and order a partial product ban.

If the ruling leads to a US sales ban on the Samsung products subject to dispute, said Hi Investment and Securities analyst Song Myung-Sup, it will start eroding the company?s revenue from the fourth quarter.

Some analysts said the key point would be whether the patents battle spreads to Samsung?s flagship Galaxy SIII phone.

The products ruled to have infringed Apple?s patents are all older models. The jury did not make any recommendation about banning their future sale.

?Samsung?s profit is expected to reach 7.5 trillion won during the third quarter. One trillion won (about one billion dollars) is not a problem for Samsung,? said James Song of Daewoo Securities.

Song said the share plunge partly reflected fears that the popular Galaxy products would be banned from the US, and concern that the SIII and subsequent models could also be subject to litigation.

However, considering the design changes and other modifications, ?it?s unlikely that anyone will confuse the Galaxy series with the iPhone from now on.?

Despite the strong reaction by stock market investors, Song said most of the models subject to a possible ban were not widely sold any more.

?I?m guessing about five percent or two million gadgets will be banned,? he told AFP.

Daishin Securities analyst Jeff Kang said the US verdict would have no immediate impact on the worldwide operations of Samsung, which had an estimated 20 trillion won in cash reserves.

But US operations would be affected.

While the legal battle would continue, ?Samsung could also opt to do business after paying royalties or unveil new models to avoid further suits.?

Mars Rover Tracks Akin to Neil Armstrong's Moon Bootprints, Scientist Says

NASA's newest Mars rover Curiosity is making tracks on the Red Planet that call to mind the groundbreaking footprints left on the moon by Neil Armstrong more than 40 years ago, a rover scientist said today (Aug. 27).

Neil Armstong, who became the first person to walk on the lunar surface on July 20, 1969, died Saturday (Aug. 25) at the age of 82. He and his Apollo 11 crewmate, Buzz Aldrin, left the first human imprints on the moon in the form of bootprints indented into the lunar dust everywhere they walked (or hopped, since the moon has one-sixth Earth's gravity).

Now, one of NASA's latest endeavors, the Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity, is making a similar impression on another planetary body. The rover landed on Mars Aug. 5 (PDT) and made its first test drive on Aug. 22.

"An iconic image of the mission" shows "four scour marks with wheel tracks," Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said today during a news briefing. He compared that photo to images of the footprints left by Armstrong on the moon. "I think instead of a human, it's a robot pretty much doing the same thing."

Grotzinger was asked by a journalist whether the Curiosity mission bore any resemblance to the Apollo 11 journey taken by Armstrong, along with Aldrin and the mission's Command Module pilot Michael Collins.

"The analogy is a terrific one," Grotzinger replied.

Curiosity, a car-size rover that cost $2.5 billion to build and operate, is beginning a two-year mission to explore Mars' Gale Crater for hints that the Red Planet may have ever been habitable to microbial life. The project is NASA's most audacious robotic mission to another world ? just as ambitious, in some ways ? as the Apollo flight that put Armstrong on the moon.

What is diabetes type 1.5? - Health Niche

In the year 2000, the World Health Organization WHO reckoned that 171 million people all over the world were suffering from diabetes. Experts predict that by the year 2030, there will be approximately 366 million people affected by the disease. Diabetes belongs to a group of metabolic diseases leading to a high and life-threatening blood sugar. Most popularly, the defect is divided into two subcategories: diabetes type one and diabetes type two. Whereas type one is caused by a failure to produce the hormone insulin and often occurs at an early age, type two results from an insulin resistance developing with age. However, there is also an in-between type which has been coined diabetes type 1.5 and which is also known as LADA, i.e. Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults.

LADA: How come?

The in-between type is described as a condition in which diabetes type one develops in an adult age. That is due to the fact that the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells can occur at different rates. If it happens fast, it leads to symptoms at an early age (type one), if it happens slowly, it leads to problems at a later age (LADA). In order to test an emerging diabetes type one, and to avoid a misdiagnosis of type two which also happens at an adult age, it is necessary to conduct antibody tests. People suffering from LADA can show a positive reaction to the antibodies test, people suffering from type two are unlikely to do so. Laboratories own ELISA kits for scientific research in order to get the results.

Avoiding a misdiagnosis

It is estimated that 20 percent of the people officially suffering from diabetes type two actually suffer from type 1.5. In order to optimize the treatment of these people, which does not in every case require an insulin therapy but might also be managed through changes in nutrition and lifestyle, antibody tests should be conducted more than once as it may track the progression of the disease. How far medical research has developed can be seen in the huge amounts of antibody test applications offered at www.antibodies-online.com/.

Christie's blunt style tested in convention speech

(AP) ? Blunt and brash, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie would seem the perfect Republican to skewer President Barack Obama and fire up thousands of GOP loyalists.

That's exactly what he was expected to do late Tuesday when he delivers the keynote address before the Republican National Convention.

His mission: making the case against Obama.

Christie's outspoken style has made him a Republican Party star and helped earn him the plum, prime-time speaking spot.

He rocketed to GOP stardom in 2009, winning the Democratic-heavy Eastern state the year after Obama was elected and establishing a reputation as confrontational to big labor and public employees.

Indeed, early in last year's GOP nominating campaign, Republicans uninspired by Romney aggressively urged Christie to seek the nomination.

New York delegate David Shimkin said he admired Christie's frankness.

"He doesn't seem to have a filter. A lot of candidates don't do that," Shimkin said of Christie.

As keynote speaker, Christie is tasked with making the opening pitch for presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who remains something of a mystery to voters even though polls show him locked in a close contest with Obama.

Christie considered running for the nomination himself but months ago decided to endorse Romney, who made a personal entreaty for Christie's support as the GOP primaries were getting under way.

Christie on Tuesday waved off a published report that he had turned down an offer to be Romney's running mate because he didn't think Romney could win in November.

"Not only do I believe he can win, I think he will win," Christie told "CBS This Morning."

Temperamentally and stylistically the opposite of the buttoned-up Romney, Christie acknowledged the former Massachusetts governor has work to do to close the sale with some voters, especially women.

"Mitt Romney's going to have to win this campaign. He's going to have to let the American people see who he is," Christie said on ABC's "Good Morning America," adding that Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as his running mate had brought more energy to the ticket.

After toppling Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine in 2009, national Republicans embraced Christie for his tough talk on fiscal matters and for taking on public employee unions, especially teachers. Videos of Christie berating teachers at town hall meetings quickly went viral, giving Christie a large national audience. Critics dubbed him "Governor YouTube," suggesting he was more interested in getting publicity for himself than for improving New Jersey's finances.

Christie has disclosed little about he will say in the speech, but said it would include a discussion of "the New Jersey experience and what the experience might mean for the country in terms of governing and hard choices."

That drew a jeer from Democrats, who said viewers shouldn't buy Christie's claim of a "Jersey comeback." They pointed to economic data showing the state still grappling with weak employment and high property taxes.

"Chris Christie is taking the stage in Tampa tonight to talk about his favorite topic: himself," state Assemblyman John Wisniewski told reporters during a conference call. "Gov. Christie's record in New Jersey is certainly not a model for our nation, and the people in Tampa should know that."

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and a likely 2016 presidential contender, went further, saying he expected Christie to deliver an "angry, Don Rickles keynote extolling the virtues of their candidate, Mitt Romney, who had one of the worst job creation rates in the nation."

Christie is popular among convention delegates, many of whom said they would have welcomed a Christie presidential candidacy.

"I just love him," said Ohio delegate Sandy Barber. "He's plain-talking. He's himself. He's someone who lets his personality come through."

AMD FX-4130 delivers 3.8GHz quad-core on a budget, A-Series chips get even cheaper

AMD FX4130 delivers 38GHz quadcore on a budget, Aseries chips get even cheaperIf you're building a starter desktop to get ready for school, you'll be glad to know that AMD is squeaking just a little more value for the dollar out of its processors. The new quad-core FX-4130 takes a 200MHz hop forward from its predecessor to a 3.8GHz base speed, and ramps up to 3.9GHz if it's feeling frisky. While it's thirstier than the earlier FX-4100 at 125W of maximum power draw, the unlocked chip's $112 retail cost is a potential sweet spot for those tailoring a system to a strict price. Anyone willing to trade overclocking support for yet more of a savings will be glad to know that AMD has been slashing the prices of its Fusion-based A-Series chips at the same time: the across-the-board cuts bring even the 2.9GHz A8-3850 down to $91. No breaks exist here for the performance crowd, alas, but AMD's new proposition might be just the excuse needed to build that budget Windows 8 PC.

Some Ideas To Make Your Home Interior The Envy Of Your ...

If you have decided that you are going to be an interior designer, then this article is for you. This article will provide you with tips and advice that can help you improve the way that your home looks.

Spending big dollars for lighting your living room is not necessary. There are stores that offer more affordable chandeliers for you. One benefit of this is the fact that you can replace the fixture if you no longer like that look without feeling guilty about it.

A vital tip about interior design is to be consistent throughout your house, as far as style goes. While you can mix things up a little, if you focus on a singular design you will make your house feel like a unit instead of a bunch of individual rooms.

If a room that you wish to decorate is smaller than you would like you do have options when it comes to changing its appearance. There are some ways you can use furniture and light to make it look bigger. Think about how you can open the space up to your home with a little rearrangement.

Ceilings should be a minimum of two shades lighter than the walls. If you paint the ceiling the same shade as the wall, the room will feel constricting. If your ceiling is brighter and lighter, your room will take on the appearance of a bigger space.

How long do you want to live in your current home? If you only plan on staying five years or less, a neutral design will suit you better. Something that might look awesome to you might put off someone considering to buy your home in the future.

An excellent suggestion when redesigning your home is to always think of things in threes. The rule of three is important to follow when you are making renovations. You could stagger them or place them in rows. You must remember to try to make them look great.

If you?re trying to fix a smaller room, it would be smart to use the appropriately sized furniture. Small rooms and large furniture items do not mix well. It?s better to choose pieces that will complement the room without overwhelming it.

Installing a skylight in an old room can make it look new again. A skylight can open up dark areas and bring in much-needed light. The right skylight can make you feel like you are actually enjoying the great outdoors from the comfort of your own home.

Before you start working in a room, decide the kind of mood you want the room to present. You can take your room in an exciting, vibrant direction or keep things calm and serene. If you pick a mood for your room, you will make the right choices when evaluating what a color makes you feel.

Buy a cheap lamp at either a garage sale, or perhaps a flea market. It is always possible to change the lamp shade and place the fixture in an inconspicuous location. By purchasing cheaper lamps, you can save money while still decorating your home.

Do not be afraid to use artwork in your interior design. A room without art can feel unfinished; by simply adding a few pieces it can feel polished. When selecting artwork for a room, choose pieces of art which fit in with the overall ambiance or mood of the room in which it will be used. If you want to have the best results, make sure the art is hung at eye?s level.

Does the room you plan on decorating have a fireplace? If so, it?s vital you properly decorate the area. This can be done by properly placing all objects on the mantle so they are balanced correctly. If the mantle is unbalanced, then the entire look and feel of the room gets thrown off.

It is not necessary to place all your seating facing toward the television in the living room. It is a nice idea to create a conversation area with a few chairs in another area of the room. You can use this area if you want to have a nice cu of tea with a friend and catch up.

When designing a room, do not forget to include walls in your design plans. Leaving walls bare and empty does not make a room look good. Add art or photos to the walls in order to help make the room your own. Just be sure that the artwork goes well with the room?s colors. Some varieties of artwork, like black velvet designs, aren?t likely to accentuate the atmosphere of any room.

After reading this article, you are ready to get started with interior design. The best way to improve your skills is to actually start doing the work. Keep your cool, remain focused and you should do well

Communication Channel Overview: Guided & Unguided - Typepad

The medium by which information is transmitted is known as a communication channel. Some of the common communication channels are fiber optic cable, coaxial cable, satellite and microwave. The transfer of data takes place in the form of analog signals and the transfer of data is measured in the form of bandwidth, the higher the bandwidth the more the data that will be transferred.

Communication channels are divided in two categories, namely guided media and unguided media.

Guided Media

In this category the communication device is attached to each other directly with cables. The data signals are restricted to a cabling platform and thus they are also known as bounded media. Generally the guided media is called LAN. Some kinds of guided media are coaxial cable, twisted pair wire and fiber optic cable.

1) Twisted Pair Cable - It is the most common used communication media and used in LAN (local area network) for transfer of data between various computers. They are also used in landline telephones to transfer data signals and voice. They are made from a pair of copper wire. They are covered with insulating materials like plastic. The transmission of data takes place at a speed of 9600 bits/second within a distance of 100 meters.

2) Coaxial Cable - They are also known as coaxes and carries signals with high frequency range. They are made from a single copper wire. They are also used in telephone lines. The bandwidth is 80 times more than twisted pair cable. They are also used in LAN.

3) Fiber Optic Cable - They use light to transfer data. The data is transferred at a very high speed of billions bit/second. They are highly used by cable operators, telephone, and broadband internet companies. They are made from glass and is as thin as the human hair. They are coated with plastic also known as jacket.

Unguided Media

In this form the data is transferred in the form of waves. This means that they do not travel along a specific path. It is also known as unbounded media. Data can be transferred all over the globe. Kinds of unguided media are microwave, cellular radio, radio broadcast and satellite.

1) Microwaves- In this kind the data is transferred via air. The waves travel in a straight line. The data is received and transferred via microwave stations. The speed at which data is transferred is 150 Mbps. They are widely used by telephone and cable companies.

2) Satellite- The signals are received from earth stations. Devices like GPS and PDAs also receive signals from these earth based stations. These satellites are located at a distance of 22300 miles above the earth. The process of transferring and receiving data takes place within few seconds. The data is transferred at a speed of 1 Gbps. They are used for purposes like weather forecast, military communication, radio transmission, satellite TV, data transmission, etc.

3) Cellular Radio- they are used for communication via mobile. High frequency radio waves are used for the transmission of data. You can receive and make calls and also access the internet.

4) Radio Broadcasting- Data is transferred and received via radio signals in the air. The transmission takes place for a long distance across cities or countries. The data is received and transferred via a transmitter. The speed at which data travels is 54 Mbps.

(AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney declared Saturday that "women need our help" as he promised to promote women-led businesses should he defeat President Barack Obama in November's election.

The appeal came as the former Massachusetts governor tried to shrug off a series of unwanted distractions before the Republican convention opens Monday in Florida.

"Just a word to the women entrepreneurs out there, if we become president and vice president, we want to speak to you, we want to help you," Romney said with running mate Paul Ryan at his side during an outdoor rally that drew an estimated 5,000 people to the Columbus area. "Women in this country are more likely to start businesses than men. Women need our help."

While the comments were focused on women entrepreneurs, the promise comes as Romney tries to close Obama's perceived advantage among female voters. Women's issues have played a prominent role in the presidential contest. Republicans faced difficult questions this week about the party's position on abortion after a Missouri Senate candidate suggested that women's bodies can prevent pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."

Both parties hope to use their conventions to appeal to female voters. The Republican convention, in particular, will feature high-profile women such as former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez. Planners also shifted the speaking slot for Romney's wife, Ann, to ensure network television coverage of her speech.

Romney's comments about wanting to help businesswoman came less than 24 hours after he raised the discredited rumor that Obama wasn't born in the United States. The remark, and Romney's efforts to explain it, overshadowed his economic message as he campaigned near his Michigan birthplace on Friday.

Romney did not repeat the remark on Saturday, but instead assailed the Democratic incumbent for failing to deliver on his campaign promises.

"I can almost read his speech now. It'll be filled with promises and tell people how wonderful things are," Romney said of the speech Obama will give at the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina next month. "It is not his words people have to listen to. It's his action and his record. And if they look at that, they'll take him out of the office and put people into the office who'll actually get America going again."

At the same time, Obama used his weekend radio and Internet address and a new TV ad to highlight Romney's plans for the Medicare health program for seniors.

Obama doesn't mention his Republican challenger in the radio address but says the Medicare program is about keeping promises to millions of seniors who have put in a lifetime of hard work.

His new 30-second TV ad says Romney "would break that promise" and replace the current Medicare system with a voucher program that wouldn't keep up with costs.

"Insurance companies could just keep raising rates," says the new ad, which was airing in Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams called the ad "another false attack from a desperate president." Williams said Romney is the one who would reverse billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare by Obama and protect the program for current beneficiaries and future retirees.

Romney's Ohio rally was expected to be his final public appearance before the Republican National Convention opens Monday in Tampa, Fla., where the former Massachusetts governor will formally accept the presidential nomination.

While GOP officials suggest the momentum is on their side heading into the crucial period, Romney and his party have faced tough questions in recent weeks on Medicare and abortion.

Now his joking reference to the president's birth certificate links him to the so-called birther movement and a wing of his party ? a combined 25 percent in an April Pew Research Center poll ? that says it either isn't sure or doesn't believe Obama was born in the U.S.

Romney caused another stir earlier in the week by declaring that big business was "doing fine" in the current economy in part because companies get advantages from offshore tax havens.

Still, polls suggest the presidential contest is essentially a tossup as Obama struggles under the weight of a weak economy.

The president's re-election campaign has pushed voter attention away from the economy in recent weeks, particularly after Romney introduced Ryan as his running mate. Ryan is the author of a controversial budget plan that would transform Medicare into a voucher-like system for future retirees.

Outside the Ohio rally, protesters heckled the presumptive GOP ticket about its plans for seniors' health care.

Speaking before Romney, Ryan said one in six Americans lives in poverty. He said the country is done being fooled by Obama's promises to change Washington.

Democrats also have seized on Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin's comment about "legitimate rape."

The congressman announced Friday that he would not leave the Senate contest despite overwhelming pressure from Romney and top Republican officials.

Romney made the birth certificate remark at a large outdoor rally in Michigan, where he grew up and where his father, George, served as governor. He told supporters that he and his wife, Ann, had been born at nearby hospitals.

"No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised," Romney said.

The crowd of more than 7,000 responded with hearty laughter.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt swiftly denounced the remark, saying Romney "embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them."

Romney later denied that the remark was directed at the president.

"No, no, not a swipe," Romney told CBS News. "I've said throughout the campaign and before, there's no question about where he was born. He was born in the U.S. This was fun about us and coming home. And humor, you know ? we've got to have a little humor in a campaign."

The authenticity of Obama's birth certificate has been questioned by Republican critics who insist he is not a "natural-born citizen" as required by the Constitution. Obama released a long-form version of his birth certificate last year as proof that he was born in Hawaii in 1961.

But conservative questions have lingered. And Romney has declined to condemn such questions, particularly from prominent donor Donald Trump.

The Obama campaign released a web video Friday night featuring Romney's remark and declaring that "America doesn't need a birther-in-chief." Democrats intend to keep the pressure on as the Republican convention gets under way.

Obama was spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, as Republicans began arriving in Tampa for their convention. But Democrats were planning to counter Romney's message throughout the week.

Reaching out to young voters, a key component of his 2008 election, Obama scheduled stops Tuesday and Wednesday in the college towns of Ames, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Charlottesville, Va.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled plans to appear in Tampa on Monday because of Tropical Storm Isaac, but was scheduled to be in Orlando and St. Augustine, Fla., on Tuesday.

After Ryan gives his convention address on Wednesday night, first lady Michelle Obama is set to appear on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman."

The high-profile events are paired with a number of smaller gatherings around the country by Democrats aiming to attract female voters and a bus tour with party activists in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Obama campaign deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said the president's team was "not going to cede four days of this campaign just because of a party convention."
