2 policemen cleared of killing Egypt protesters

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court has cleared two policemen of killing protesters during last year's uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

The two officers from Cairo's populous el-Darb el-Ahmar district were charged with killing five protesters and injuring seven during a demonstration against Mubarak's regime on Jan. 28, 2011, when tens of thousands took to the streets.

The day, dubbed the "Day of Rage" marked the beginning of the end of Mubarak's nearly 30 years in power. Many of about 850 Egyptians killed during the uprising died on that day.

Only a handful of officials and policemen have been brought to trial over the deaths. Even fewer have been convicted, either due to lack of evidence or poor investigations. Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison for failing to stop the killings.

How Small Businesses Benefit from Online File Sharing | Training ...

As a small business owner, you may recognize the need to share files with clients, customers, associates and even employees. In the past, FTP has been the preferred method for sharing large files online. Because FTP transfers have been notoriously unreliable, small business owners must rely on other methods to share files and collaborate with colleagues; online file sharing services are quickly becoming the go-to method of storing and sharing information. Here are five benefits of online file sharing for the small business owner:

1.?????? Bounce-Backs are Eliminated

In the past, business owners utilizing FTP as a file sharing resource experienced high amounts of frustration. Transferring large files through FTP can take several minutes. Waiting for a file to send, only to be alerted a few seconds later that it was too large is a common occurrence. Online file sharing eliminates the instance of bounce-back to almost nil.

2.??????
Instant Sharing

Small business owners can share their files in a virtual instant with whomever they choose. Files can be shared via email attachment or weblink, whittling wait times to mere seconds. Instead of emailing large attachments over email, business owners can simply send a weblink to the persons of their choosing. Instead of having to wait hours to begin collaborations or discussions regarding business files, meetings can be conducted in real-time.

3.??????
Increased Security

Online file sharing sites feature security features not found on FTP networks. Users can password protect files, ensuring that only those who are granted permission can view the information. In fact, some sites are so secure that users won?t even know that files exist unless they are given a password by the owner of the file. This type of security can give business owners peace of mind in knowing that their confidential information is kept safe from prying eyes.

4.??????
Increased File Limits

Many FTP networks and email providers have a cap on file sizes. By utilizing online file sharing, business owners can often send single files up to 10 GB in size, rather than the typical 2 GB size limit set by email providers. This can be important for business owners who have large chunks of information to share, including videos and Power Point presentations.

5.??????
Cost-Effectiveness

Online file sharing sites are often incredibly cost-effective. Most sites offer a tiered program of pricing, allowing business owners to pay for the level of service that they need. Utilizing an FTP network to share files can cost small business owners much more money than online file sharing services because FTP networks require an actual server and properly trained staff. Many online file sharing sites also allow users to try their services for a month or more at no cost before being required to purchase a service plan.

Online file sharing services make sense for the small business owner. Increased security, a higher cap on file sizes and cost-effective pricing make online file sharing services the most sensible option. By simply sending a weblink, business owners can be assured that desired recipients will be able to view files quickly, which allows all parties to work more efficiently.

Just like Gearbox promised, the new DLC pack for their great first person-rpg hybrid Bordelands 2 is now available for purchase on the Xbox Live MarketPlace and on the Playstation Store; the DLC is also available for the PC version.

The third DLC pack for Gearbox?s game, named Mr. Tongue?s Campaign Of Carnage, will feature a new storyline involving the violent tournament hold by the titular Mr. Tongue. The aim of the tournament is pretty simple: finding the most badass person in all of Pandora! The tournament winner will also be offered the Big Loot as a prize, making the tournament even more worthwhile for all contestants. Quite a few new features are included into the DLC pack: new enemies like Biker Bandits, new quests from Tiny Tina, Moxxi, new areas and bosses and a surprising character return from the first Borderlands game.
You better be prepared since we?re talking about high level areas: bring in your strongest friends if you?re not good enough to enter the tournament and explore the new areas.

Mr. Tongue?s Campaign of Carnage is available for 800 Microsoft Points on the Xbox Live Marketplace and for 9.99$/9.99 euros on the Playstation Store. If you already have bought the Season Pass for Borderlands 2 the DLC is available without additional costs. With the good amount of content included into the DLC, the final price is well worth it!

Emmitt Smith and Apolo Anton Ohno both said goodbye to the ballroom on Tuesday night.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

When the level of performance reaches as high as it did during the semifinals round on "Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars" this week, pretty much any elimination is a shocker. But as Tuesday's cuts proved, there's still room for a bit of surprise.

Former NFL star Emmitt Smith and Olympic gold medalist Apolo Anton Ohno were both given the ballroom boot, falling just short of next week's finale. Moving on to finals are Shawn Johnson, Melissa Rycroft and Kelly Monaco.

Both men could have been contenders for the mirror ball trophy, though neither reached the heights attained during their first seasons in the ballroom. But they prevailed until the 9th week this time, thanks to a lot of love from the judges and strong fan bases.?

Both factors are especially true of the former NFL star, which makes his elimination such a surprise. He kicked off the season with a strong start, but struggled through much of the rest of his stint -- though you wouldn't know it from the judges' scores and comments.

Last week's trio salsa had pros Kym Johnson and partner Cheryl Burke dancing circles around him as he struck a few poses and called it good. (The judges declared the lack of dance great and gave him a perfect score.) Head judge Len Goodman even went so far on Nov. 5 to say he himself, a former professional dancer, couldn't have done Emmitt's hipless, tentative, and off-beat rumba-samba mashup as well as the football star did. With a fan base willing to vote him through after such lackluster performances and?high scores that defy explanation,?it's more surprising that Emmitt isn't one of the finalists.

But perhaps it was a good time for the football player to hang up his dancing shoes. In a clip shown Tuesday, Emmitt repeatedly confused his second semifinals performance, telling two different people he was dancing the paso doble. (His dance was the tango.) And it sounds like he may be ready to relax after weeks of intense training.

"I can honestly go and lay my head on a pillow, knowing I gave everything I had," he said of his elimination. "It's been a tremendous experience. It's been a great ride. ... All of these contestants here have pushed me to another level. ... It's been wonderful."?

Speed skater Apolo, whose sensual rumba Monday earned him a perfect score and Tuesday's encore dance, shared Emmitt's sentiment. "This show is amazing for far beyond the mirror ball ... it forces you to become confident, stronger," he said after he got the bad news. He also called pro partner Karina Smirnoff a champion, and said she taught him a lot about himself.?

Next week, finalists Kelly, Shawn and Melissa will be performing what host Tom Bergeron called "a supersized freestyle" as well as a favorite dance. The stars will also learn what their music is during the live show for the tricky instant round.

Were the right two eliminated? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

(AP) ? Feeling the pinch of the sluggish economic recovery, many Americans setting out on the nation's annual Thanksgiving migration had to sacrifice summer vacations, rely on relatives for airfare or scour the Web for travel deals to ensure they made it home.

It's not just tight family finances making travel tough. Airlines struggling to save on jet fuel and other expenses have cut the number of flights, leading to a jump in airfares. Those hitting the roads face high gas prices and rising tolls. Now, with talk of the nation sliding off a "fiscal cliff" come January, many travelers said they're accepting that sacrifices for pricy holiday journeys have become the norm.

"You become immune to it, I guess," said Chris Zukowski, a 43-year-old locomotive engineer from the Chicago suburb of Huntley, as he hugged his wife and three children goodbye at Chicago's O'Hare Airport and lamented he could not afford to join them on the holiday trip to New Jersey.

"You have to cut back on things just to make sure that you can afford to do stuff like this, so they can go visit grandma," he said, referring to his son and two daughters.

If the nation's travel patterns are any kind of barometer for the state of the economy, the travel forecast for Thanksgiving week suggested a slight upward nudge as people and businesses recover slowly from the 2007-09 recession in which Americans lost nearly a quarter of their wealth.

Around 43.6 million Americans were expected to journey 50 miles or more between Wednesday and Sunday, just a 0.7 percent increase from last year, according to AAA's yearly Thanksgiving travel analysis. After a couple years of healthy post-recession growth, this year's numbers suggested it will take a stronger economy to lift travel demand significantly, the travel organization said.

More people are driving, fewer are flying and the average distance traveled was expected to be nearly 17 percent ? or about 120 miles ? shorter than a year ago, it said.

Army Pfc. Jordan Clark, of Biloxi, Miss., said he was only able to fly because relatives pooled their resources to buy his ticket.

"It's been difficult. My parents help out, my grandparents," the 20-year-old serviceman said before getting on a flight from Chicago to San Antonio. He wasn't so lucky over the summer, when he had to make the same journey by bus in what became a three-day ordeal thanks to breakdowns. But it saved him more than $200.

Some families are even agreeing to bump Thanksgiving dinner to Saturday, for example, allowing those traveling long distances to get cheaper, off-peak fares and avoid crowds, said Joseph Schwieterman, a transportation researcher at DePaul University.

Aided by smartphone apps, social media and other technology, consumers are getting better at sniffing out deals and are realizing they need to be flexible with dates and even with which airports they chose when booking, said Courtney Scott, a senior editor at Travelocity.

"I think people are really becoming smarter, more creative travelers and shoppers," Scott said.

For some travelers, the coping mechanism was decidedly less sophisticated: Travel now, worry about the costs later.

"I think it's my personal style to say, 'It's the holidays. Who cares?' And deal with the consequences later," said Olivia Melman, who flew from Chicago to Philadelphia on Tuesday. The 22-year-old, who works in human relations at Citigroup in New York City, said the costs would set her back, but family is a priority.

Having skipped their Thanksgiving trip last year, Nishiya Sivaruban and her husband were able to save enough to take their two children to the Hawaiian island of Kauai on a special holiday journey. They saved about $200 each on airfare by flying out of O'Hare instead of Milwaukee, which is closer to their home in Waukesha, Wis.

She and her husband are originally from Sri Lanka and have family links to the founder of a Hindu temple and monastery on Kauai that they were excited about visiting.

"There's a lot of things we're thankful for so we wanted to go to that temple," she said.

Sewage to help Microsoft serve up Web pages

6 hrs.

Microbes feasting on raw sewage at a wastewater treatment plant will soon help power the cloud, thanks to a Microsoft project that will use biogas generated by the little bugs to run a data center.

Data centers are typically massive banks of servers that keep the Internet humming along nicely. They handle the flow of digital information when you order a song on iTunes, check your Facebook, send an instant message, or post on Twitter, for example.

Worldwide, these warehouses of servers use the equivalent output of 30 nuclear power plants, according to the New York Times.?

The Microsoft-backed project announced Monday is a test of the company?s Data Plant concept that aims to integrate energy hungry data centers with sources of fuel as a means to increase energy security by freeing itself from the electric grid and meet a company goal of carbon neutrality.

?The intriguing thing about biogas is it is sustainable,? Sean James, a senior research program manager for the Microsoft Data Center Advanced Development team, told NBC News.?

?Wherever there are people, there is demand for data, but wherever there are people there is going to be this supply of biogas, so it is a full circle when it comes to the supply and demand chain,??

The biogas is generated by two anaerobic digesters at a wastewater treatment plant in Cheyenne, Wyo. It is currently flared off, which is a waste of useable energy. The Microsoft project will capture the gas, clean it up a bit, and feed it to a fuel cell that turns it into electricity.

Any residual power that the fuel cell generates but is not used by the data center will be routed back to the wastewater treatment facility to offset its energy costs, James explained.?

In addition, heat generated from the fuel cells will be routed back to wastewater treatment plant to keep the microbes at their optimal temperature for munching on sewage.?

The $5.5 million pilot project will provide 200 kilowatts of power for a modular data center, a fraction of the 30 billion watts of electricity experts believe are required to run the world?s data centers.

But the concept is scalable to the ?literally thousands of sites? around the world where fuel resources are going to waste, Brian Janous, a data center utility architect at Microsoft, told NBC News. Data Plants can be scaled to fit those available resources, meaning less fuel is wasted.

?We may go into a region and say we need 30 megawatts of potential capacity to serve customer demand in that region,? he explained. ?Well, it doesn?t have to be a single 30 megawatt data center. It could be multiple data centers that are sized uniquely to meet whatever the available fuel resources are.?

The pilot project gets underway in March 2013. If it works as envisioned, it could something to Tweet about.

Helping Hands: Teen raises money for kids in Nicaragua

This is the first installment of our ?Helping Hands? series for this week where we give thanks to those extraordinary Latinos whose mission is to help others.?

A vacation abroad with friends sounds like a typical summer for a group of high school students, but Daniel Nieto?s?experience this past summer?was anything but.

For Nieto, the trip was to Nicaragua, where he and 15 of his?classmates volunteered at La Mascota Children?s Cancer Hospital, the only children?s hospital in Nicaragua. For three weeks Nieto and his fellow classmates worked on rebuilding ?a game room for the children with their bare hands and teaching English, all while making a lasting connection with the young patients.

?We got to connect with patients, it was so moving to talk with the kids,? says Nieto. Speaking with the patients and discovering their stories?affected?him more than he can say, and by the end of his summer with La Mascota, Nieto had changed.

?I came home with feelings of sadness and feeling that I had to do something more,? says 18-year-old Nieto. ?As clich?-ish as it is, I was able to appreciate what I have on a deeper level, allowing me to put my ideas into reality.??He quickly began working to fill the distance between La Mascota and La Ca?ada, California where he is a student, and he was motivated to create a campaign for the student run organization?A World of One?s Own.

A World of One?s Own (AWOO) is a non-profit dedicated to providing impoverished communities and families with the resources they need to access opportunity. As the only option for treatment, families have no choice but to travel to La Mascota so that their child may be treated. However, the cost of $2 for transportation has proven to be too much for these?families. With the help of the funds raised by AWOO, the children at La Mascota Hospital are provided with food and?transport during their treatment.

Nieto took his campaign to www.indiegogo.com in hopes of raising $12,000 by Thanksgiving.

During his senior year of high school, Nieto fills his breaks with continued efforts to help La Mascota, selling $1 churros during lunch that will go directly to the patients. Having raised over $5000 thus far and with his deadline approaching, he took to his school?s stage to get the word out about AWOO. Standing?in front?of his peers, Nieto shared his story about his personal connection with the patients at La Mascota.

?We are also asking students to give a template to their parents who will forward it on to their colleagues and friends to see if they would please donate,? he says.

After his experience?this past summer, Nieto has plans to go back next year. He wants to meet new patients as well as those he has already connected with to share his story.?This Thanksgiving Nieto is thankful for the chance to have his message heard in order to help save the lives of the children at La Mascota.

?We are here to help them and I fully comprehend what I can do to best help these families.?

Team Boid will cease future development of its Twitter client

Boid Beta

Graham Macphee, one of the members of Team Boid, announced today on his personal blog that the group would cease future development of its popular Twitter client, Boid. When the group set out to create Boid, the intention was to show the development world how well Twitter clients could look and work. They wanted to be the "Tweetbot for Android," and they surely made a splash. Well regarded as an example of Google's new "holo" design guidelines, Boid was extremely popular.

Unfortunately, now without ever exiting "beta," Boid will no longer be developed by the group. Macphee explains that the Boid app wasn't meant to be an achievement for the team, but rather a tool that helped in the achievement of their true goals. They believe that what they accomplished while working on Boid is a positive result for them. The overall result, as they see it, was that other apps followed their lead and started to use design in ways that helped the overall user experience.

Macphee reiterated via Twitter after the post went up that this is not an official announcement -- and there was no mention of the moves Twitter's making that's driving other clients out of business -- but that this is what they intend to make official very soon. If there was any silver lining in this, it's that their intention going forward is to make Boid open-sourced for anyone to continue to work with it in the future. We'll be excited to see how Boid does as the community takes on the development effort.

'The Californians' On SNL: Jeremy Renner Guest Stars As Lawyer In Thanksgiving Episode (VIDEO)

Call us crazy, but after four installments of "The Californians," SNL's parody of the Los Angeles lifestyle, we're starting to feel invested in the one-dimensional characters and the tissue-thin plot line.

In this week's very special Thanksgiving episode, tensions erupt when Stuart finds Devon the handyman in a liplock with Rosa the maid. At first, Stuart makes it seem as if he's just looking out for Rosa's best interests -- after all, Devon has broken hearts in Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino and Redondo Beach. But when Stuart inadvertently reveals that he knows the location of Rosa's home in Angelino Heights, it becomes all too clear that his anger is rooted in jealousy.

SNL host Jeremy Renner guest stars in the sketch as Stuart's lawyer, and he pulls off a mouthful of a "Californian" monologue:

I was just at the Beverly Center, buying myself some killer chinos. Took Crescent Heights up across Sunset and drove up Laurel Canyon when I remembered I had something super important to tell you. So I made a left on Ventura, by the Baja Fresh, got onto Beverly Glen and made a quick right onto Carmelita.

Renner delivers the news that Stuart has fathered "an illegitimate little bro" with September, a woman he met at an Eagles concert. But the plot thickens when Devon the handyman reveals that he knows September, too. Cue the dramatic music!

Fred Armisen's definitely got the giggles in this episode of "The Californians," and it's a struggle for him to get through the entire sketch without completely cracking up. It's not hard to see why -- the ridiculous accents and facial contortions are enough to make the entire cast break in this "dress rehearsal" version of an earlier episode.

Watch the sketch in the video above and let us know in the comments below: which is your favorite "Californians" episode?

Iowa scientists: Drought a sign of climate change

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? More than 130 scientists from Iowa colleges and universities say this year's drought is consistent with a warmer climate predicted as part of global climate change and more droughts can be expected.

Scientists and researchers from 27 Iowa colleges and universities signed the Iowa Climate Statement released Monday. It says a warming climate causes wet years to be wetter and dry years to be hotter and dryer. Those extremes lead to more flooding and drought, and Iowa has experienced both in recent years.

The state was hard hit this year when drought spread across two-thirds of the country.

The scientists say warming will continue as global emissions increase and greenhouse gases accumulate, and they expect a growing number of droughts as soon as the 2020s.

White House says didn't heavily edit Benghazi talking points

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (Reuters) - The White House did not heavily alter talking points about the attacks on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya, an official said on Saturday.

"If there were adjustments made to them within the intelligence community, that's common, and that's something they would have done themselves," Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser, told reporters. "The only edit ... made by the White House was the factual edit as to how to refer to the facility."

After a closed-door hearing with former CIA Director David Petraeus on Friday, Republican Representative Peter King said that unclassified talking points prepared by the CIA for use by lawmakers about the September 11 attack originally pointed specifically to al Qaeda involvement. King said they were edited before being cleared for use.

Rhodes said the White House, and also the State Department, changed references to the diplomatic facility as a "consulate," "because the consulate in Benghazi was not formally a consulate. Other than that we worked off the points that were provided by the intelligence community, so I can't speak to any other edits that may have been made."

The assault on the U.S. mission and nearby CIA annex in Benghazi has turned into a flash point between Democratic President Barack Obama and Republicans.

Republicans accuse the White House and in particular the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, of misleading the public just after the attack by suggesting the assault was a spontaneous act instead of a planned terrorist operation. The Obama administration denies misleading anyone and says it discussed information about the Benghazi tragedy as it came in.

"What I can say is those points, and what Susan said, indicated that we believed extremists were involved in this attack," Rhodes said.

When asked on Fox News on Saturday who might have made the edits, King said he did not know.

"That's why it's important to find out why it was done. It could be anywhere in the Defense Department, the State Department, the Justice Department, the White House," King said. "(We need) to find out why it was done, what the purpose of it was."

He added: "I have my own beliefs, that for whatever reasons, the administration honestly believes that the war against al Qaeda is pretty much over and that's the message that they wanted to present. But on the other hand, they may have some valid reason. I think we have to look at it."

(The story changes to consulate from conflict in fourth paragraph.)

Alabama crushes Nova to win 2K Sports Classic

NEW YORK -- Trevor Releford and Alabama passed an early test with ease in a championship-game blowout.

Releford hit all five of his 3-point attempts and scored 25 points as the Crimson Tide beat Villanova 77-55 on Friday night, running away in the second half to win the 2K Sports Classic benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project."I thought we came out tonight for 40 minutes and really did a good job," Alabama coach Anthony Grant said. "Our style of play defensively, I thought it was a great effort. You look at the numbers from a defensive standpoint, I felt like it was a pretty dominating performance by our guys."Rodney Cooper had 17 points and the Crimson Tide (4-0) broke it open with some sharp 3-point shooting. Alabama, which made only 22-of-61 attempts (36 percent) from long range in its first three games, went 9 for 15 from beyond the arc (60 percent) against a Villanova team that had held opponents to 33 percent on 3s."I'm not surprised," Cooper said when asked about his team's fast start. "In practice every day we try to challenge each other, so I'm not surprised at all."JayVaughn Pinkston had 17 points to lead the Wildcats (3-1) and was selected to the all-tournament team in his return home to New York. Freshman guard Ryan Arcidiacono scored 11 for Villanova, which shot a miserable 32 percent from the field."It wasn't really a disappointment, it was just a learning experience for us," Pinkston said. "We learned tonight that we've just got to play more together and play Villanova basketball rather than one-on-one."After leading by three at halftime, Alabama briefly fell behind and then took control for good with a 19-4 spurt early in the second half.Cooper got it started with eight quick points in a 3:06 span, including a 3-pointer and a three-point play. Releford, who finished 8 for 10 from the floor and 4 of 5 at the foul line, had a fast-break layup to put the Crimson Tide ahead 45-35 with 11:35 to go.Cooper added another 3-pointer 23 seconds later and his layup made it a 15-point cushion with 8:16 remaining, prompting Villanova coach Jay Wright to call a timeout. It was too late. After the Wildcats cut it to 52-41, Releford scored eight straight points and flashed a quick grin when his second 3 in a row made it a 19-point bulge for Alabama with 5:09 remaining."I hope Alabama is a great team. I think they're a lot better than us right now," Wright said. "I just thought they were outstanding. Just very disciplined, very well-coached, very physical and solid. Especially offensively, I thought they really, really were intelligent offensively. Just a very, very good team."Both coaches emptied their benches in the final seconds, giving little-used players and walk-ons a chance to play at Madison Square Garden. After the final horn, Alabama players gathered for team pictures with the shiny trophy at center court. Releford, who scored 14 points against Oregon State in the semifinals, was chosen tournament MVP. Cooper also made the all-tournament team."This tournament was great for us because we had some challenges here," Grant said. "We learned some lessons every game and have been able to take something from it. I am proud that our guys have been willing to do that understand we are not where we want to be and we are hoping to be better."Alabama, which held off the Beavers 65-62 Thursday night on Cooper's 3-pointer with 12.2 seconds left, had a much easier time in the title game. The Crimson Tide outscored Villanova 32-16 in the paint, poured in 23 points off 14 Wildcats turnovers and had a 37-27 advantage on the boards."These guys, man, these guys were good. These guys were really athletic, really strong and they attacked the glass," Wright said.Villanova beat Purdue 89-81 in the semifinals after overcoming an eight-point deficit with 1:27 remaining in regulation, but there was no comeback this time."I think we have potential to be a good team. We are definitely a work in progress. We've got a lot of work to do," Wright said. "We could have lost last night's game very easily."The lead changed hands seven times in the first half. Alabama went on a 10-0 run to go up 18-12 and led 29-26 at the break after shooting 50 percent from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range. The Crimson Tide also had a 19-10 edge on the glass and held Villanova to 30 percent shooting (6 for 20).Alabama first found its shooting touch in the second half of the semifinal. The Crimson Tide finished 7 for 21 from 3-point range against Oregon State after opening 2 of 10 in the first half."Really proud of the effort of our guys and the growth of our team," Grant said.

Ireland to clarify abortion rules after woman's death

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland's government pledged on Thursday to clarify its abortion laws after an Indian woman who was refused a termination died from blood poisoning in an Irish hospital.

Thousands took to the streets to protest on Wednesday after news broke of the death of Savita Halappanavar of septicemia following a miscarriage 17 weeks into her pregnancy.

Activists in the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country, which has some of the world's most restrictive laws on abortion, say the refusal by doctors to terminate the pregnancy earlier may have contributed to her death.

"I was deeply disturbed yesterday by what Savita's husband said. I don't think as a country we should allow a situation where women's rights are put at risk in this way," Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore told parliament on Thursday.

"There is no question of equivocation. We need to bring legal clarity to this issue and that is what we are going to do."

Irish law does not specify under what circumstances the threat to the life or health of the mother is high enough to justify a termination, leaving doctors to decide. Critics say this means doctors' personal beliefs can play a role.

Halappanavar was admitted to hospital in severe pain on October 21 and asked for a termination after doctors told her the baby would not survive, according to her husband Praveen.

The fetus was surgically removed when its heartbeat stopped days later, but her family believes the delay contributed to the blood poisoning that killed Halappanavar on October 28.

Praveen said he would wait for the results of an investigation before deciding whether to sue, but that Ireland's Roman Catholic tradition appeared to have been a factor in the decision to deny a termination.

"I am still in shock. It is hard to believe that religion can mean somebody's life," Praveen Halappanavar told Reuters. He said he planned to return to Ireland from India, where he travelled with his wife's body.

The Irish health authority (HSE) has launched an inquiry which the health minister said must "stand up to the scrutiny of the world." Irish media said Praveen would be interviewed.

The Indian couple were resident and working in Ireland, he as an engineer and she as a dentist.

POLITICAL STORM

Despite a dramatic waning of the influence of the Catholic Church, which dominated politics in Ireland until the 1980s, successive governments have been loath to legislate on an issue they fear could alienate conservative voters.

Fine Gael, the senior partner in Ireland's ruling coalition, told supporters before a recent election that it would not introduce new laws allowing abortion during its five-year term, despite pressure from its junior partner Labour to act.

The government said it had received long-delayed recommendations from an expert panel on introducing new rules on abortion, and would report before the end of the month.

Four out of five Irish voters support a change in the law to permit abortion in cases where a mother's life is at risk, according to a recent opinion poll.

But a vocal anti-abortion minority has dominated the debate on abortion in Ireland in the past, with campaigners arguing that the adoption of legislation or guidelines for medical terminations would bring in abortion through the back door.

In 1992, when challenged in the "X-case" involving a 14-year-old rape victim, the Supreme Court ruled that abortion was permitted when the woman's life was at risk, including from suicide. A European Court of Human Rights in 2010 ruled that Ireland must clarify what this means in practice.

"This is exactly what the (European) court was complaining about ... The court has not said Ireland must or must not have abortion, they said they have to clarify circumstances," said Ronan McCrea, a barrister and lecturer in law at University College London.

"The vagueness ... gives excessive scope to doctors to follow their own personal views or it means even if they want to give the treatment, they worry they'll fall foul of the law," he said.

Halappanavar's death has dominated debate in Ireland's parliament since news of it broke on Wednesday. Her photograph was spread across front pages of all Ireland's major newspapers on Thursday, while editorials demanded action from politicians.

The fact that she is a foreign national has heightened the government's embarrassment. The story was on the front of several large Indian newspapers and family members were featured on national television.

The Indian government said on Thursday it deeply regretted Halappanavar's death. "The death of an Indian national in such circumstances is a matter of concern," a spokesman said.

Justice official: Register voters automatically

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One of the top enforcers of the nation's civil rights laws says government should be responsible for automatically registering citizens to vote by using existing databases to compile lists of all eligible residents in each jurisdiction.

The proposal by Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez, chief of the Justice Department's civil rights division, follows an election with breakdowns that forced voters in many states to wait in line for hours.

In remarks at George Washington University law school, Perez said census data shows that of 75 million adult citizens who failed to vote in the 2008 presidential election, 60 million were not registered and therefore ineligible to cast a ballot.

Perez says one of the biggest barriers to voting in this country is an antiquated registration system.

Judge OKs iPhone 5, newest Galaxy devices for next big trial

Some of Apple and Samsung's latest devices have been given the go-ahead to be included in an ongoing lawsuit between the two tech giants.

In an order yesterday, U.S. magistrate judge Paul Grewal granted motions from both companies that sought to add devices launched after a legal cutoff in mid-June.

That shortlist includes Apple's iPhone 5, which debuted in September, Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1, the U.S. model of the Galaxy S3, and, notably, Google's Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS in conjunction with the Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

The new devices add to an already impressive tally by Apple, which is accusing 19 of Samsung's devices of infringing claims from eight of its patents. The case, which is separate from one a Northern California jury decided in Apple's favor in August, is scheduled to go to trial in March 2014.

The most curious bit is the inclusion of Google's Android operating system into the spat. So far, the battle between the two companies has been seen as a proxy for a fight between Apple and Google, though much of Apple's offense during its previous suit against Samsung focused on exterior design issues and not just what it said were similarities to patented software features.

In the order, Grewal notes that Apple can't just target the Android OS for all Samsung devices, and that the OS itself is not something Samsung developed. Instead, the use of the OS is restricted simply to the a Samsung's smartphone, the Galaxy Nexus. "The court will not permit a sweeping amendment that might apply to devices other than those properly tied to Samsung," he said.

Both companies have time to add other devices to the fray. In the closing of Thursday's order, Grewal gave Apple a not-so-subtle warning that it should refrain from trying to block any efforts on Samsung's part to do just that with some of its latest products, which have not yet been brought into the spat.

"Given the early stage of this litigation and the reasoning of this order, the court notes that Apple should think twice before opposing similar amendments reflecting other newly-released products -- e.g. the iPad 4 and iPad Mini -- that Samsung may propose in the near future," Grewal wrote.

You can read the full copy of the order below:

Harrison's Bond just wants to be like any of the boys | The Observer

?

Harrison High School freshman Caitlin Bond became the fi rst girl to ever play
football at the school and made it through the entire season, despite her lack of
size and knowledge of the game.

?

By Jim Hague

Observer Sports Writer

Mike Bond remembers the day that his daughter, Caitlin, came home with a simple request. ?She told me she wanted to play football,? said Mike Bond, a Harrison native who is a security guard, working with the Hudson County?s Sheriff?s Department. ?At first, I was a little hesitant. But I told her that if she wanted to do something, all she had to do was put her mind into it and she could do it.?

Caitlin, a 14-year-old Harrison High School freshman, was determined to give football a try.

?I play softball and basketball, but football was something different that I wanted to do,? said Bond, a freshman wide receiver/ defensive back. ?I wanted to prove that it was a sport that not only guys could play. Football was something different than all the other sports. I knew I was going to give it a try.?

So when Caitlin told her father, she didn?t know what the reaction would be.

?He was very supportive,? Bond said of her father. ?He just told me that he didn?t want me to get hurt.?

Harrison High School head football coach Dave Nankivell knew Caitlin from playing in the town?s recreation softball program.

?I?ve known her for about three years and I knew she was serious, but I didn?t know what her motivation was,? Nankivell said. ?I also didn?t know what we had to do legally.?

Nankivell said that he met with athletic director Kim Huaranga and school principal Ron Shields.

?We had to make sure we crossed every T and dotted every I,? Nankivell said. ?This was all something new to me.?

Caitlin had to be told of all the different ramifications that came with being the first girl to ever play football for Harrison High School.

There would be dressing in a separate locker room, with no access whatsoever to the boys? locker room. She was going to be asked to do all the same things that any member of the football team would be asked, in terms of physical conditioning.

?I sat her down and asked her if this was something she really wanted to do,? Nankivell said.

Caitlin Bond knew what was being expected of her.

?Once she understood, I said, `Welcome to the team,?? Nankivell said. ?I just wanted to make sure she understood first.

My immediate reaction was caution. Caitlin?s not the biggest girl in the world, so I wanted to make sure she was able to hold her own. I also wanted to make sure that she wasn?t going to make a mockery of it. I really wanted to know her motivation. When she told me all she wanted to do was play football, I was all for it.?

And with that, little Caitlin Bond bucked the odds and became the first girl to ever play football in Harrison.

?She was not treated any differently from any of the boys,? Nankivell said. ?She was asked to do everything.?

Since Bond never played organized football before, she had to find out what position she felt comfortable at.

?They actually asked me what position I wanted to play,? Caitlin Bond said. ?I told the coaches I wanted to be a tight end or a wide receiver. I knew I wanted to be part of the offensive line.?

Bond never once was concerned about being able to handle the physical rigors of the sport.

?I wasn?t really worried about getting hurt,? Bond said. ?If you get hurt in football, at least it proves you?re trying. The first couple of practices, I was wondering whether I could handle the conditioning, but I was used to it from playing basketball and softball. Even when the physical part got tougher, people always asked me when I was going to quit. I never once had the urge to quit. I knew I could handle it.?

?Caitlin is a very head strong kid,? Mike Bond said. ?If she puts her mind to something, she?s going to do it, even if it is to prove everyone wrong. Sure, she came home with some bumps and bruises, but she was there every day. She hurt her knee and never said she couldn?t do it. She always said yes. She felt confident. The more she went to football practice, the more she liked it.?

Bond never once thought it was a difficult grind.

?It wasn?t that tough,? Bond said. ?So I got dressed in a different locker room. I got on the field right after. The boys all accepted me as their teammate. I knew they would accept me, because I think I?m a good teammate in whatever sport I play. I felt pretty sure I could make it through the whole season.?

Which she has accomplished.

Despite the balky knee, Caitlin Bond survived the football season. She didn?t get to see much action, perhaps special teams play on the junior varsity level. But she was as much a part of the team as anyone else.

?She showed up every day for practice and was there every day,? Nankivell said. ?It was a challenge to her, being that she?s undersized. But she did everything she was asked to do. I think the players didn?t look at her as a male or a female. She was just another football player. She stuck it out and came a long way in a short amount of time. There was never any quit in her and that?s why she was accepted as a teammate.?

Nankivell was asked how much of a football player Caitlin became.

?She needs time to learn the proper technique,? Nankivell said. ?We lose a lot of firstyear football players because of it. But what Caitlin did is commendable. I give her a lot of credit because it wasn?t easy. She tried her hardest to be like everyone else. It?s not an easy sport. But she earned her stripes by being there.?

Caitlin Bond is happy she was able to stick it out through a tough season, through a year where the Blue Tide has not won a single game.

?I?m glad I did it,? Bond said. ?I?m going to try to do it all four years of high school. There is a sense of accomplishment. Doing this helps build my confidence in everything. I think a lot of people are surprised I made it. They thought once I got hurt that I would quit. I think I?m even surprised I made it.?

However, her father isn?t.

?I?m very proud of her,? Mike Bond said. ?She showed me that she really wanted to do something and she did it. It made me feel very proud of her being able to make it.?

As her athletic career in Harrison High continues, Bond hopes to play basketball and softball. Only in those sports, she?ll be with her own gender. She can put away the football pads and cleats until next August.

New powers to allow Mike Russell to ?hire and fire? college boards

UNDER-fire education secretary Michael Russell is set to be handed new powers to hire and fire college boards, it emerged today.

? Opposition parties are calling for plans allowing Education Secretary Mike Russell new powers to hire and fire college boards to be ditched

? Mike Russell criticised after chairman of Stow College board ?forced? to quit following spat with minister after secretly recording a private meeting

? Both Mike Russell and Alex Salmond had to apologise to Parliament on Thursday following misleading statements over college funding

Opposition parties are now calling for the plans to be ditched after Mr Russell found himself at the centre of a political storm last week amid claims of bullying and misleading Parliament.

Stow College board chairman Kirk Ramsay quit after a spat with the SNP minister and the controversy culminated in {Alex Salmond and Mr Russell both being forced to issue embarrassing apologies to Parliament| http://www.scotsman.com/news/snp-forced-into-double-apology-over-incorrect-college-funding-figures-1-263882|Link to artcile} yesterday after misleading statements about college funding.

Ministers currently have powers to remove college board members over mismanagement, but new reforms of the sector will see this power extended to situations where a colleges of regional boards appear at risk of failing.

Labour education spokesman Hugh Henry said today that Parliament must act to stop these changes.

?After Alex Salmond?s apology to parliament was dragged out of him, we now need Mike Russell to apologise to college staff, students, the 20,000 people on college waiting lists and the people of Scotland for the lies he told,? Mr Henry said.

?If Alex Salmond couldn?t do the right thing and sack him, and Mike Russell won?t do the decent thing and resign, we need at least to make sure that the Education Secretary?s power to bully and intimidate is curbed.

?The SNP government has plans to give Mike Russell the power to hire and fire college chairs and board members. That is at the heart of his power to bully and intimidate college leaders and must not happen. The power must be dropped from the SNP?s legislative plans.

?This is an education secretary who either lies, or is so incompetent he doesn?t know if college budgets are going up or being cut. He is manifestly unfit to run Scotland?s schools, colleges and universities.?

Mr Ramsay quit earlier this week after Mr Russell called for his head. The college chair had recorded a private meeting on the future of the college sector on a ?smart pen? and shared this with others. But Mr Ramsay insisted that 80-100 people had been present and denied behaving in a surreptitious manner.

Labour are also calling on the Stewart Maxwell, the SNP convener of Holyrood?s education Committee to u-turn on his refusal to allow an inquiry into Mr Russell?s behaviour.

?Mike Russell clearly is not running education properly and it is the duty of the Scottish parliament to investigate his wrongdoing,? Mr Henry added.

Add intrigue and personal touches to your marketing campaigns. Post a good photo of yourself and use your actual name. You can have a handwritten welcome statement.

Advertising is an essential component of marketing your business on the Internet. You will be glad you spend the money over time because it will pay for itself. Doing so can bring in business that is difficult to find in other ways.
