I spent some precious free time these past few weeks reading Janet Morana?s new book Recall Abortion. As a mother of 5 young homeschooled children my free time is rare, believe me. What is even rarer though is me being pulled back to a book with a sense of determination to not only finish reading it but a new resolve to put into action something that can change society. Recall Abortion touched my heart and reminded me why I am so committed and passionate about educating women on this issue.
As someone who is actively engaged in the natural women?s health and pro-life movements, I found Morana?s book to be exactly what we need to help formulate a game-plan to end this horrific violence against both women and children. Morana uses the words of women who have experienced abortion to testify to the great harm that this practice results in for many women. She boldly declares that there is nothing healthy about abortion and that as a country concerned about healthcare and its delivery, we must recall the practice of abortion to protect women.
?They say that without access to legal abortion, women will be forced to return to the days of the back-alley abortion.
But have we really ever left those days? Abortion clinics are still largely unregulated. Some women still die from botched abortions. Women still endure severe physical and psychological damage.?
I have never had an abortion. I have never had a close friend or relative disclose an experience of abortion to me. I know they happen, but in many ways I have been spared that pain in my own life. ?My knowledge of abortion has come largely from literature and medical explanations of the procedures. I?ve read terms and seen diagrams that have made my stomach churn and have moved me to activism, but I?ve had no personal emotional connection, aside from an intense empathy for what I imagine women in these situations to be feeling.
Morana?s book offers numerous testimonies of post-abortive women sharing their physical and emotional experiences of abortion. As co-founder of the Silent No More campaign she has helped to compile thousands of women?s first-hand accounts of abortion and many are shared in this book. This personalization of abortion helped me to move abortion from an abstract concept to a flesh and blood reality, no pun intended.
This refocusing on the human center of abortion helps people like me who are pro-life by rationale or moral code to remember the people aside from the baby who are affected by it. It?s easy to sometimes distance ourselves from the pain involved with abortion?s wounds because it may not seem to directly affect us.? But this is simply a form of denial. We SHOULD experience a profound sadness and be moved to prayer for healing for all those involved with abortion.
40 Days for Healing Prayer
In fact, as part of my renewed motivation for increased activism after reading this book I have agreed to assist a dear friend in piloting a new apostolate to pray for the healing of wounds caused by abortion. It is called 40 Days for Healing and will take place alongside the 40 Days for Life campaign starting this month. I encourage you to take part in both campaigns both to witness at the abortion clinics to women about to make this horrible mistake and to pray for the healing of all those who are living with the deep wounds caused by their abortions. Recall Abortion is a book that will remind you of the millions of walking wounded among us and will pull at your heart to develop a deeper sense of compassion and care for their healing. Along with the numerous examples of physical scars that these women report, it will remind you that the deep injury caused by the maternal instinct being suppressed and violated causes many women intense emotional and spiritual pain for years to come.
