'Oddly Normal: One Family's Struggle to Help Their Teenage Son ...

Posted on 30. Dec, 2012 by William Burton in Bio/Memoir, Reviews

New York Times journalist John Schwartz? book Oddly Normal?(Gotham Books) is about two straight parents? efforts to help their son as he deals with a complex of problems related to sexuality and developmental difficulties. At a very young age, Joseph is identified by his parents as gay, but the drama in the book comes from psychological and social difficulties that keep Joseph bouncing around from therapist to therapist and in constant conflict with the school system in the New Jersey town where his family lives. Joseph?s problems become more complicated as he attempts to deal with them on his own, even as he attempts to come out at school, eventually resulting in a suicide attempt and a new openness with his family.

Though Schwartz has noble intentions in bringing his son?s story to print, ultimately the book adds little to ?the gay-related memoir canon. In fact, most of the drama in Oddly Normal has little to do with Joseph?s sexuality. Persistent attempts by psychologists, psychiatrists and crusading teachers to diagnose Joseph somewhere along the autism spectrum give the book most of its dynamism, since the Schwartzes are from the start relatively gay-affirmative parents.

Indeed, the Schwartzes decided that their son was gay when he was a toddler, based on his penchant for dolls and glitter. Having accepted this fact, they spend much of the rest of the book waiting for their son to come out to them, wondering how to push him into accepting his gay identity, and fretting because he hasn?t come out yet.

Although it?s encouraging that there are parents out there who would encourage their children to grow up gay, I do find it quite bizarre that the Schwartzes decided their son?s sexuality for him. In fact, the book is stifled by a self-congratulatory tone that seems to be hinting that the ultimate in gay-affirmative parenting involves choosing for your child. This strikes me as especially odd given the emphasis gay communities continue to put on childhood autonomy?given the fact that so many LGBTQ kids grow up in homophobic or transphobic families. Should that autonomy only be something we fight for when the parents hate homosexuality?

Schwartz? spends a lot of time referring to, or trying to prove, the biological origins of gayness. While this might be an affirmative exercise for many, I found it a bit wrongheaded, since the author constantly shifts back and forth between talking about same-sex attraction and the fact that ?girly boys? seem statistically likely to grow up to be gay.

Partly a defence of his parenting strategy?Joseph?s effeminacy is what led to his and his wife?s pre-emptive acceptance of their son?s sexuality?and partly an education detour, this chapter could be useful if you have friends or family who need convincing that people have little choice over their sexuality. But the conflation of same-sex desire with cross-gender behaviour is not rigorously examined, and it leads Schwartz to misunderstand why some of Joseph?s peers tease him. Does it not seem likely that Joseph?s peers tease him for his effeminacy, not because of his sexual desire? In other words, that what John Schwartz calls ?sexual desire? is less of an issue (especially at this young age) than ?sexual identity??

This is the kind of discussion we don?t get in Oddly Normal. While this doesn?t discredit the book as a whole, the lack of discussion about this issue (which is the subject of David Halperin?s new book, How to be Gay?(Belknap Press at Harvard University Press, 2012) is just one sign among many that Oddly Normal comes out of a very straight milieu indeed.

The debate over the kinds of romantic relationships gays, lesbians and queers should engage in?or at least talk about in public?is ongoing. While the liberal LGBTQ establishment pursues marriage equality across the board, it also promotes a monogamous ideal based on straight norms (for better or worse). Schwartz?s book reflects this ideal. He turns to his gay friend Brian for advice about getting Joseph to come out; Brian in turn urges John to get him to come out while he?s still in high school, so he can ?get the raging-hormones thing out of [his] system at the same time that straight kids do? and thus avoid a ?never-ending delayed adolescence.? Reflecting on his own childhood, Brian writes that he wishes he had had gay role models: ?The goal would have been to show me that while sex may be great, relationships are better.? The gay identity he grew up into ?led him to anonymous sex for a couple of years after coming out.?

Though the Schwartzes do actively want to introduce their son to gay and lesbian culture?they take him into New York so he can visit a community center, and so forth?they don?t seem eager to have him exposed to much history or debate. This is finally the biggest flaw in Oddly Normal: speaking from a decidedly straight position, only rarely calling on gays or queers to talk about what it?s like to grow up in a heterosexual world, the book feels deeply cut-off from our communities, uninformed by our experiences. While Schwartz does give solid information about the social science on same-sex love, he?s not at all sensitive to the debates that have been raging among LGBTQ people for decades.

Obama Second Term: Immigration, Economic Revival Top President's Checklist

* Immigration reform, economic growth top Obama to-do list
* Energy, gun control round out second term priorities
* Obama wants immigration, gun measures in first year
By Mark Felsenthal
WASHINGTON, Dec 30 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama is pledging to focus in his second term on immigration reform, boosting economic growth through infrastructure repair and energy policies that nod to environmental protection.
The president is mired in a difficult fight with congressional Republicans to avoid sharp spending cuts and steep tax increases collectively referred to as the "fiscal cliff." However, he still has a longer-term to-do list for his remaining four years in office, he said in an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" that was broadcast on Sunday.
Obama, who won re-election in November after a campaign in which he succeeded in painting himself as a strong advocate for the middle class and those aspiring to join it, also promised in the interview to make a run at passing gun control legislation in the first year of his second term.
"Fixing our broken immigration system is a top priority," he said. He renewed a pledge to introduce legislation in the first year of his second term to get it done.
Immigration reform is a sensitive subject for the president, who failed to fulfill his promise to revamp the system during his first term. Latino voters were a critical part of the coalition that helped get him re-elected, a fact that may soften political opposition from Republicans, who are eager to bolster their support with that demographic group.
Immigration reform supporters on the left believe that the 11 million undocumented foreigners in the United States should be allowed a path to work toward citizenship. But opponents believe that this approach would reward people who broke the law by coming to the United States illegally.
Republicans have sought stronger measures to keep illegal immigrants from entering the United States from Mexico. Advocates on both sides of the debate want to more effectively verify legal workers in an economy in which businesses want to hire non-U.S. workers ranging from low-paid farm hands to technology-savvy professionals.
While negotiations to avoid the fiscal cliff have hogged the spotlight in the first weeks after the election, Obama said he wants to take steps to ensure the sluggish recovery gains steam.
Many observers had believed a persistently high level of unemployment would thwart Obama's chances of winning a second term. The U.S. jobless rate peaked at 10 percent in 2009 after the harshest recession since the Great Depression but has been falling and dipped to 7.7 percent in November.
The president said rebuilding crumbling roads, bridges and schools could put people back to work and put the economy on a sounder footing. He said he would pair those steps - which would likely involve government spending - with deficit reduction measures to tame the nation's budget deficit.
The president also said energy policy would be a leading emphasis. He said he would focus on how the country can produce more energy and export energy, while also dealing with environmental challenges. He did not specify how he would do that. The president's effort to fight climate change with a broad emissions trading system failed during his first term.
When pressed, Obama added gun control to his list of priorities, reiterating his support for a ban on assault rifles and high capacity clips, as well as background checks.

Psychiatric test for suspect in NYC subway death

NEW YORK (AP) ? A woman suspected in the death of an immigrant who was pushed off a New York City subway platform has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Erika Menendez, 31, was arraigned Saturday night on a charge of murder as a hate crime. She had told police she has hated Muslims since Sept. 11 and thought the victim was one. Judge Gia Morris ordered that Menendez be held without bail and be given a mental health exam.

Menendez is charged in the death of Sunando Sen, who was crushed by a train in Queens on Thursday night. Friends and co-workers said Sen, a 46-year-old Indian immigrant, was Hindu.

"I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I've been beating them up," Menendez told police, according to the district attorney's office.

"The defendant is accused of committing what is every subway commuter's worst nightmare," Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Menendez was incoherent at her arraignment in Queens criminal court, at one point laughing so hard that the judge told her defense lawyer, "You're going to have to have your client stop laughing."

Menendez admitted shoving Sen, who was pushed from behind, authorities said. She was arrested after a tip by a passer-by who saw her on a street and thought she looked like the woman in a surveillance video released by police.

A call to Menendez's attorney was not immediately returned Sunday.

Angel Luis Santiago, who used to work at the Queens building where Menendez's mother and stepfather live, said he was shocked by her arrest.

"It surprised me what she did," he said. "She never acted that way."

Menendez's next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 14.

Sen was the second man to die after being pushed in front of a New York City subway train this month. Ki-Suck Han was killed in a midtown Manhattan subway station on Dec. 3. A photo of Han clinging to the edge of the platform a split second before he was struck by a train was published on the front page of the New York Post, causing an uproar about whether the photographer, who was catching a train, or anyone else should have tried to help him.

A homeless man was arrested and charged with murder in that case and is awaiting trial. He claimed he acted in self-defense.

It's unclear whether anyone tried, or could have tried, to help Sen on Thursday.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged residents Friday to keep Sen's death in perspective as he touted new historic lows in the city's annual homicide and shooting totals.

"It's a very tragic case, but what we want to focus on today is the overall safety in New York," Bloomberg told reporters following a police academy graduation.

But commuters still expressed concern over subway safety and shock about the arrest of Menendez on a hate crime charge.

"For someone to do something like that ... that's not the way we are made," said David Green, who was waiting for a train in Manhattan. "She needs help."

Green said he caught himself leaning over the subway platform's edge and realized maybe he shouldn't do that.

"It does make you more conscious," he said of the deaths.

Such subway deaths are rare, but other high-profile cases include the 1999 fatal shoving of aspiring screenwriter Kendra Webdale by a former psychiatric patient. That case led to a state law allowing for more supervision of mentally ill people living outside institutions.

Transit officials said last week they would consider installing barriers with sliding doors on some subway platforms. Other cities including Paris and London have installed such barriers.

Inflation Investing and You | Penny Stocks

Inflation Investing

Considering Inflation Investing

It is never too soon to consider inflation investing. While today?s climate looks like it will be turning towards inflation at any moment, it is still a useful thought exercise when an inflation is nowhere in sight. Figuring out what you need to do when prices go up faster than your income is not only a good way to think about how you invest, but a smart way to make early additions to your portfolio.

Thinking About Inflation Investing

Inflation investing, at least on the surface, is not terribly different from standard investing. Your goal, after all, is to find a way to get the most out of your money. What makes inflation investing different is the fact that your money is rapidly losing value as you invest. Your goal is to stay ahead of the rising cost of living by investing in those stocks and commodities that will rise in value even as other stocks fall to a lack of buyers. In this case, you are concentrating on the necessities instead of concentrating on consumer or luxury goods. If people need it, they will continue to buy it. If people can find a reason to forgo a product or service during a period of high inflation, though, you can expect fewer buyers and thus a lower value.

Waiting to invest during a period of inflation is not a good idea. While you might realize that you need to switch over to a certain type of stock or commodity during that period, every other buyer will be doing the same. That means prices will be quickly inflated ? which is great for those who got in early, but less useful for those who are investing in a panic. Spending some time thinking about inflation investing before things go bad is the best way to make sure that you actually make money during the process.

New York's MTA subway data hits Android in beta form

Subway Time for Android

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority this week released its "Subway Time" app for iOS, which gives real-time updates for trains in and and around New York City. Need to know how soon a certain train will be at a certain station? That's the app to have.

Only, we use Android around these here parts. And MTA's not making an app for us. But what it is doing is making the data freely available to anyone -- and we've already seen our first "unofficial" app released in beta. Subway Time for Android, released by The Holodeck, taps into that MTA data and brings a fairly functional app to Android. There are bugs. There are layout issues. But those can be fixed. That we're seeing the app ported over in just a matter of days is proof positive that we're on the right side here, folks. So break out those MTA cards and let's give this guy a go.

More: MTA Developer Resources; Thanks for the tip, @EladKatz!

Din of hammers, oil wells signal Bakersfield boom

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.?For most of its existence, Bakersfield has inhabited that awkward in-between place. Not as sophisticated as Los Angeles, just over the Tehachapi Mountains to the south, not as wealthy as its longtime economic rival Fresno, equidistant to the north.

But as many communities continue to struggle economically, good things are happening in this place best known for endless oil fields and the "Bakersfield Sound"?a twangy style of steel guitar music made popular by hometown country crooners Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.

Bakersfield and surrounding Kern County find themselves in lofty positions on key national lists measuring economic vitality: No. 1 metro area for long-term private sector job growth, No. 1 county for construction gains and No. 1 large metro area for annual economic growth.

Cheap land, affordable housing, proximity to Los Angeles, a location that's within a three-hour drive of 90 percent of the state's population, and a planning department that doesn't throw up roadblocks are driving the region's economic revolution, business leaders say.

Caterpillar's new parts distribution center at the confluence of Interstate 5 and Highway 99, the state's two major north-south transportation arteries, went from handshake to grand opening last August in just eight months. It joined 35 other logistics centers near there such as Ikea, Frito Lay, Dollar General, Famous Footwear and Target, drawn to the county because it is

a one-day turnaround for truckers delivering from San Francisco to San Diego.

The demand for industrial and office space has left Kern County with little inventory.

"Everything is moving," said David Wagner, contractor Wallace & Smith's superintendent on a 28,000-square-foot business complex that's now a skeleton of I-beams. "The developer already has tenants for this and it won't open until April."

The contractor just finished a 160,000-square-foot cold storage facility in Delano, a NASCAR-style racetrack and a regional blood bank. It has four apartment complexes under construction and will break ground in February on a minor league baseball stadium.

Electrician Bryce McCall wondered during the downturn whether he had chosen the right profession. Not anymore.

"My wife and I would discuss whether I would be better off going to the oil fields," he said as he drilled wiring conduits in a new garage at a new development. "Now the jobs are happening and we're starting to pick up."

There's such an active business climate that this fall the Kern County Economic Development Corporation and Bakersfield Californian newspaper bucked industry trends by launching a print paper, the Kern Business Journal, now on its second edition. A new east-west freeway through the middle of town is paved and close to opening.

Long reliant on agriculture and oil, there's diversity of industries emerging, with renewable energy and aerospace gaining a foothold.

At the Mojave Air and Space Port in southeast Kern County, Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo preps for the day it will carry passengers into suborbital space, and Paul Allen's Stratolaunch Systems is building the world's largest aircraft?one that will carry rockets with commercial cargo and, eventually, passengers to the edge of space.

The wider, extended runway the company needs already was built. The space port complex has 400 acres pre-approved for construction.

Despite the progress, hurdles remain. Unemployment in the county is 12.4 percent, down from 16.2 percent in December 2010 but still above the statewide average of 9.8 percent. And Bakersfield still is a hard sell for some.

Two years ago, State Farm consolidated its insurance centers in Rohnert Park in the Bay Area and Fresno into its Bakersfield office. The company expected that 35 percent of the Rhonert Park workers would take the transfer. After taking bus tours of the city with its vibrant downtown and tree-lined neighborhoods, 70 percent of the workers took the transfer.

"People come here and they say, 'Oh my God, there are amenities and people can speak full sentences.' It's the perception versus the reality," said Richard Chapman, president of the Kern County Economic Development Corporation.

Chapman said the area's workforce, while reliable, needs to be better educated and trained. Many young people tend to go away to college and not come back. "We have 100 job openings for welders, but companies aren't going to train you," Chapman said.

Bakersfield has boomed before?it saw huge population and economic growth when the economy surged in the late 1990s and into the early years of the new century. But it fell hard when the bottom dropped out of the housing market. Now, it's housing that's helping to make the city attractive again.

The median price of a three-bedroom home is $130,000?down from $216,000 in 2007?which makes the region appealing to employers looking to relocate.

It's also a cheap place to do business. In a recent analysis of the taxes and fees charged by 421 U.S. cities, the annual Kosmont-Rose Institute Cost of Doing Business Survey rated Bakersfield a "low cost" city for doing business. Los Angeles was rated "very high cost."

Much of the boom Bakersfield is enjoying is because high oil prices and new technology for extraction have revived the $10 billion industry that seemed dried up 25 years ago when Kern County set out to diversity its economy and expand its tax base. Some estimates place up to 80 percent of California's oil under Kern County soil, with an estimated 12 billion barrels trapped in shale, the largest deposit of any county in the nation. Today's $100-a-barrell prices have inspired the innovation needed to extract it.

Chevron is expanding its offices, and other oil companies and related industries are eying land for development.

Kern County also has embraced 21st century energy by pre-zoning project areas for wind and solar. The value of wind energy projects is assessed at $7.5 billion. Wind will generate 3,000 new Kern County jobs this year, the industry estimates.

Recently, philanthropist and retired oil executive Gene Voiland bought the Bakersfield Blaze, a Class A farm team of the Cincinnati Reds. His stadium project is part of a new high-end shopping complex on the affluent west side of the city. PG&E is removing an antiquated oil-burning power-generating plant to clear 200 prime acres for the project.

"I've moved here four times while I was in the oil business, and I'm retired here because I thought it was the best place I've ever lived," he said. "It's a good town. People do their jobs."

Stepparenting & Blended Families

It's the most daunting task many parents will ever face: bringing two growing families together into one brand new marriage. But even though statistics show that most remarriages are at high risk--especially when there are kids involved--more and more people are learning how to make them work and more and more kids are coming out of them with their psyches and souls intact. This honest and hopeful book looks at those successes--and at some failures--to show what they have in common: ten essential secrets that are at the heart of a healthy blended family.

As a stepparent with six children in a blended family, Barbara LeBey draws on her own family's hard-won success, as well as on extensive interviews and new research to show how to navigate the stresses, sticking points, pitfalls and perils most couples don't even anticipate. Starting with her first controversial secret--that the new marriage comes first, even before the demands of the children--LeBey debunks prevalent stepfamily myths and anticipates common traps. (Among them, money issues, warring stepsiblings, and destructive exes.) A strong advocate for children (including how to guard against fade-out parenting), she also suggests ways that in-laws, schools, and the legal system itself could provide better support for blended families. REmarried with Children is an expert, compassionate, down-to-earth book to turn to over and over again for advice, support and sanity.

Key topics include how to:

-Meet your children's and stepchildren's needs--without letting them undermine your new marriage

-Understand the new roles, new rules, and the new relationships for children and stepchildren of a blended family

-Deal with angry and/or manipulative exes--without adding fuel to the fire

-Handle key decisions about finances, religion, traditions, behavior and discipline

-Maintain healthy relationships with your children's grandparents--and other relatives--from a previous marriage

-Recognize warning signs of trouble ahead--and get the help you need

Fusion Energi Most Fuel Efficient US Sedan

Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid rated up to 108 MPGe city, making it America?s most fuel-efficient sedan

The 2013 Ford Fusion ? recently voted Green Car of the Year ? just got greener as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certified the new Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid at up to 108 MPGe, making it America?s most fuel-efficient sedan.

Fusion Energi is the Ford brand?s fifth electrified vehicle to launch in the past year and is expected to accelerate the company?s record hybrid sales pace, including its highest monthly hybrid sales month ever in November. Ford is seeing demand for fuel economy across its lineup as the brand ranks No. 1 in fuel economy customer satisfaction by J.D. Power and now beats Toyota for leading efficiency in every segment where both compete.

The EPA also certified Fusion Energi to deliver up to 92 MPGe highway and a combined 100 MPGe ? figures that could potentially help save customers an estimated $6,850 in fuel costs compared with an average new car over the course of five years.

?The Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid is the exclamation point for Ford?s transformed lineup of fuel-efficiency leaders that now beats Toyota across the board,? said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development.

Adding to Fusion Energi?s value ? and the myriad ways it beats Toyota Prius plug-in ? are its innovative technologies that are designed to help win over both novice and pro hybrid owners.

SmartGauge with EcoGuide, for example, provides in-vehicle customizable displays, including instantaneous fuel economy readings and coaching functions to help drivers understand and optimize their fuel efficiency.

SYNC with MyFord Touch offers multiple ways ? including voice commands ? for customers to manage and control their phone, available navigation, entertainment and climate functions. Plug-in hybrids and all-electric models have additional options for monitoring information like battery state of charge.

EV+ combines the built-in GPS of Ford SYNC with proprietary software algorithms developed by Ford engineers to learn frequent destinations. As a result, vehicles give drivers more drive time in electric-only mode.

Fusion is designed with the driver?s sense of style in mind, delivering a midsize sedan that offers functional design elements that enhance its sleek exterior and promote fuel economy. A video explaining the origin of Fusion Energi can be found here.

With Fusion Energi and Fusion Hybrid, the all-new Fusion lineup brings the widest range of powertrain options to the U.S. midsize segment. Fusion also is available in gas-powered versions with a choice between a pair of fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines and a normally aspirated four-cylinder engine.

Fusing technologies

Many of the innovative technologies of Fusion Energi are shared across Ford?s electrified vehicle lineup and draw from the automaker?s portfolio of about 500 patents related specifically to hybrid technology:

??? ?MyFord Mobile: Enables access via smartphone or Web-based interface to perform key tasks, such as monitoring a vehicle?s state of charge and current range or locating charge stations and planning routes to find them
??? ?Eco cruise: Saves vehicle energy by relaxing acceleration compared to standard cruise control
??? ?EV mode button: Conveniently mounted on the console to the right of the shifter ? allows a driver to switch vehicle operation between three modes: all-electric, normal hybrid operation and conserve battery power for later use
??? ?Regenerative braking is capable of capturing and reusing more than 90 percent of the braking energy normally lost during the braking process
??? ?Hybrid transmission, designed by Ford engineers in-house, is capable of operating at high speeds and in a smooth, fuel-efficient manner at the same time
??? ?Advanced lithium-ion batteries used in Ford?s electrified vehicle lineup ? covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile component limited warranty ? are smaller and lighter than nickel-metal-hybrid batteries used in previous-generation hybrids
??? ?Charge port with LED light ring, conveniently located on the driver?s side and near the front of the car, it features a light ring that illuminates to indicate charge status

African Union head visits Central African Republic

BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) ? The leader of the African Union, Benin's President Thomas Boni Yayi, has proposed a government of national unity to resolve the rebel conflict in Central African Republic.

Boni Yayi arrived here Sunday to try to find a negotiated resolution to the country's crisis. The president of the African Union met with President Francois Bozize and then made an appeal to the rebels.

"I beg my rebellious brothers, I ask them to cease hostilities, to make peace with President (Francois) Bozize and the Central African people," said Boni Yayi at a press conference in Bangui, the capital. "If you stop fighting, you are helping to consolidate peace in Africa. African people do not deserve all this suffering. The African continent needs peace and not war."

Boni Yayi said that Bozize had pledged to have an open dialogue with the rebels with the goal of establishing a government of national unity, which would include representation from the rebels and the Bozize government.

Bozize also addressed the conference and said, although he plans to stay in power until his term ends in 2016, he is not against having the rebels enter a coalition government with him.

"We'll probably be able to set up a national unity government. I apologize to the suffering Central African people," said Bozize. "It is a message of peace to my brothers of Central African Republic, "said Bozize.

The African Union's leader arrived in Bangui when many feared there would be a fight over the capital, Bangui, a city of 600,000.

According to several families in Bangui, members of the Presidential Guard have kidnapped people suspected of supporting the rebels who have seized 10 cities in the country's north over the past three weeks.

A rebel spokesman, Col. Juma Narkoyo, warned Bozize: "We warn the head of state and his family to stop abducting our parents. They have nothing to do with it. If he wants to solve its problems, he comes to meet us on the ground. We expect firm feet. " H0e said that a dozen people have already been arrested in Bangui.

On his arrival in Bangui, Yayi Boni had a private meeting for more than two hours with Bozize in the VIP lounge of Mpoko airport, which is secured by French troops.

So far Boni Yayi has no meetings scheduled with rebels or with the democratic opposition.

Boni Yayi's diplomatic effort comes as France has deployed an additional 180 troops to protect its interests.

The French reinforcements arrived Sunday from nearby Gabon, bringing the total French military force in the capital, Bangui, to nearly 600, Col. Thierry Burkhard told The Associated Press Sunday. The troops are to protect French residents in the capital, which many fear will be attacked by the rebels.

As fears mounted that the rebels would attack Bangui, Bozize imposed a curfew from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Bozize earlier appealed to France for help against the rebels, but French President Francois Hollande's government said it would only protect French interests and would not prop up the Bangui government.

As the rebels have made a rapid advance across the country's north, residents in the capital now fear the insurgents could attack at any time, despite assurances by rebel leaders that they are willing to engage in dialogue instead of attacking Bangui.

On Saturday the rebels seized the city of Sibut, 185 kilometers (114 miles) from Bangui.

Sibut, a key transportation hub, fell without a shot being fired because the Central African Republic army and forces from neighboring Chad had pulled back to Damara, 75 kilometers (46 miles) from Bangui on Friday, said Minister of Territorial Administration Josie Binoua.

Neighboring African countries have agreed to send more forces to support the Bozize government.

Representatives from the 10-nation Economic Community of Central African States, or ECCAS, agreed at a meeting in Gabon Friday to send forces to CAR, but did not did not specify how many troops would be sent or how quickly the military assistance would arrive.

The ECCAS states, with more than 500 soldiers via their regional peacekeeping force in Central Africa, over the weekend warned the rebels to halt their advances.

"ECCAS forces are on high alert, and the city of Damara is the limit not to cross," said Antonio Di Garcia, the ECCAS representative in Bangui. He urged the government forces and the rebels to hold to their current positions and to begin dialogue.????????????

?The ongoing instability prompted the United States to evacuate about 40 people, including the U.S. ambassador, from Bangui on an U.S. Air Force plane bound for Kenya, said U.S. officials who insisted on anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the operation.

The United States has special forces troops in the country who are assisting in the hunt for Joseph Kony, the fugitive rebel leader of another rebel group known as the Lord's Resistance Army. The U.S. special forces remain in the country, the U.S. military's Africa Command said from its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany.

The evacuation of the U.S. diplomats came after criticism of how the U.S. handled diplomatic security before and during the attack on its consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11. The ambassador and three other Americans were killed in that attack.

French diplomats have remained in Bangui despite a violent demonstration outside its embassy last week. Dozens of protesters, angry at France's lack of help against rebel forces, threw rocks at the French Embassy in Bangui and stole a French flag.

This landlocked nation of 4.4 million people has suffered decades of army revolts, coups and rebellions since gaining independence in 1960 and remains one of the poorest countries in the world. The current president himself came to power nearly a decade ago in the wake of a rebellion in this resource-rich yet deeply poor country.

Bozize's government earlier reached out to longtime ally Chad, which pledged to send 2,000 troops to bolster Central African Republic's own forces.

The rebels behind the most recent instability signed a 2007 peace accord allowing them to join the regular army, but insurgent leaders say the deal wasn't fully implemented.

The rebels say they are fighting because of their "thirst for justice, for peace, for security and for economic development of the people of Central African Republic." The rebels also are demanding that the government make payments to ex-combatants.

Despite Central African Republic's wealth of gold, diamonds, timber and uranium, the government remains perpetually cash-strapped.

The United Nations Security Council condemned the violence and reiterated its demand that the armed groups "immediately cease hostilities, withdraw from captured cities and cease any further advance towards the city of Bangui."

(AP) ? Cain Velasquez waited 13 miserable months for the chance to put the UFC heavyweight belt back around his waist.

When he finally got Junior Dos Santos back in the cage, Cain didn't waste another minute.

Velasquez reclaimed the UFC heavyweight title Saturday night, thoroughly battering Dos Santos on the way to a lopsided unanimous decision in UFC 155.

Velasquez (11-1) took early control of the rematch of his only career loss, flooring the Brazilian champion with a big right hand midway through the first round. Velasquez spent most of the match stalking and pounding on Dos Santos (15-2), who never fully recovered from the first-round shot that left him swollen and woozy.

"I was so tired, but I had to endure," Velasquez said. "My coaches and everybody helped me so much. He's tough, too. ... It feels so good to get this. This is my wife's Christmas present. I promised her I would do this."

Velasquez won every round on every judge's scorecard in the UFC's traditional year-end event in its hometown. The three judges scored the bout for Velasquez 50-45, 50-44 and 50-43. The Associated Press also favored Velasquez 50-44, giving a 10-8 advantage to Velasquez in the first round.

Dos Santos took the UFC belt away from Velasquez in November 2011 in just 64 seconds, earning a first-round stoppage victory with one vicious overhand right in Anaheim, Calif. Velasquez refused to blame a knee injury for his only defeat ? but in the rematch, he demonstrated exactly what he can do at full strength.

"I knew that Junior was a tough striker and he was able to end our last fight that way, so I was prepared for him this time," Velasquez said. "I was able to effectively use my striking and my grappling to control him throughout the fight and get the title back."

Jim Miller won a narrow unanimous decision over Joe Lauzon in a sensationally bloody fight on the undercard, and rising middleweight Costa Philippou stopped Tim Boetsch in the third rounds. Yushin Okami grappled his way past Alan Belcher and Derek Brunson easily beat veteran Chris Leben.

But 12,423 fans bought a record $3.2 million in tickets at the MGM Grand Garden to see the second meeting in what seems certain to be a memorable heavyweight trilogy ? although UFC President Dana White said Velasquez is likely to fight again, probably against Alistair Overeem, while Dos Santos heals.

"I don't know if you saw (Dos Santos) after the fight, but he looked terrible," White said. "It's going to be a while until he starts training again."

Dos Santos' loss was his first in the UFC in 10 fights with mixed martial arts' dominant promotion, and his first defeat anywhere since November 2007. Dos Santos expected the rematch to last longer, but also predicted a second knockout.

Instead, Dos Santos barely avoided getting stopped in the first round, and he headed straight to a hospital after the bout. White initially thought Dos Santos had a broken jaw, but the fear was unfounded.

"His game was very effective, and tonight he was better than me," Dos Santos said. "It's not usual for me to take a punch, but he walks forward all the time. His takedowns, his grappler game is very effective, so congratulations for him."

Velasquez immediately showed the rematch would bear little resemblance to the first fight, pursuing Dos Santos from the opening bell and quickly backing up the champion. Velasquez then floored Dos Santos with that huge right to the head midway through the round, and Dos Santos had to cover up in the corner while barely surviving an onslaught of strikes and ground-and-pound.

After brusquely swatting aside his stool and choosing to stand in his corner between rounds, Velasquez went to work on the ground in the second, and the former Arizona State wrestler repeatedly got the boxing specialist into bad positions.

Dos Santos struggled to regain his rhythm, and Velasquez managed another takedown early in the third round before repeatedly tagging the champion with shots that left his face discolored and puffy.

At the final bell, Velasquez collapsed on his back at the center of the cage, pointing skyward with both hands. Although Overeem is tops among several heavyweights who would like a title shot, a third bout between Velasquez and Dos Santos can't be too far away.

"Cain Velasquez, like you said (last year), I'm going to come back and I'm going to take my belt again," Dos Santos said.

Dos Santos' win over Velasquez last year in the UFC's first fight on American network television catapulted the hard-punching Brazilian heavyweight into an international spotlight. Both fighters injured their knees in the month leading up to their first fight, but stayed in the bout because of its importance.

Dos Santos defended his title against Frank Mir earlier this year and got a lucrative sponsorship deal with Nike while emerging as one of the promotion's most likable stars.

Miller and Lauzon also turned in one of the UFC's best fights of 2012 in its final show, starting when Miller opened a gaping gash over Lauzon's right eye early in the first round. Blood gushed out of Lauzon's face and onto the canvas, yet he blinked it away and survived the round to a standing ovation.

Lauzon bled substantially for the final two rounds, yet traded big shots with Miller and even took down his fellow veteran, although submission holds were nearly impossible due to the blood slickening both fighters' bodies. Miller narrowly avoided two submission attempts by Lauzon in the final seconds before celebrating his second win in four fights.

"Joe Lauzon is a tough kid," Miller said. "I knew I was going to have to bring my best effort to put him away and I was never able to. That's how good he is on the ground. And even in the last minute, look what he was trying to do to win the fight."

After two dull main-card bouts resulted in wins for Okami and Brunson, Philippou (12-2) and Boetsch entertained the crowd ? but Boetsch (16-5) left his first loss in two years with big cuts on his forehead and nose along with an apparently injured hand. Philippou was impressive in his fifth straight victory, winning as a fairly late replacement for Chris Weidman, his training partner.

In the early fights, veteran Jamie Varner (21-7-1) continued his comeback with a split-decision victory over Melvin Guillard (47-13-3), and heavyweight Todd Duffee (9-2) returned to the UFC after an acrimonious 2?-year absence with a nasty first-round knockout victory over Phil De Fries.

Analysis: Mo. GOP marks 10 years atop Legislature

By DAVID A. LIEB

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. ?

When Tom Dempsey arrived at the Missouri Capitol as a freshman lawmaker, he was assigned an office so small that he had to lay diagonally on the floor if he needed a nap. Dempsey was, after all, one of the least senior Republicans in a building dominated for a half-century by Democrats.

Today, Dempsey is preparing to move into the Capitol suite of the Senate president pro tem, as a leader of the largest Republican legislative majority since the Civil War era.

The Jan. 9 start of Missouri's legislative session will mark the 10th anniversary of complete Republican control of both chambers. The transformation has been so resounding that Republicans will now hold two-thirds majorities in both the House and Senate. And because of term limits, Dempsey will be one of only a few lawmakers remaining who can even recall what it was like when Democrats once ruled the building.

A lot certainly has changed in Dempsey's political circumstances. But what has a decade of Republican lawmaking meant for Missouri?

For starters, taxes are lower ? at least for certain businesses. Missouri's social safety net is smaller. Fewer people receive government-subsidized health care and child care. Funding for colleges has lagged as enrollments have risen. And aid to public schools ? though it has grown to new highs ? still falls short of what's recommended by a state formula.

Although per capital personal income has risen while Republicans have led the Legislature, so also has Missouri's unemployment rate and the number of people in prison. There are fewer restrictions on guns, more constraints on abortion and no longer any limits on campaign contributions.

Republicans see their legacy from one perspective: "Missouri has been placed on a more fiscally sound, fiscally conservative approach," said Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, who was Senate president pro tem when Republicans took control of the chamber.

Added Dempsey: "Missourians are better off for us having led the state in the Legislature."

Democrats see the past decade from another view: "This phobia of taxation ? what we're effectively doing is eating our young," said Rep. Chris Kelly, who spent a decade in a Democratic majority before leaving the Legislature in the mid-1990s, then returning in 2009.

Here's a look at a few ways the Republican-led Legislature has affected people's lives:

1. Taxes. Not only have there been no tax hikes under Republican leadership, but the Legislature has waived hundreds of millions of dollars of taxes ? often with the intent of benefiting businesses and economic development.

Republicans began by enacting a sales tax holiday for back-to-school supplies in 2003, and followed it up with a similar tax-free shopping period for energy efficient appliances in 2008.

The Legislature authorized tax breaks for downtown redevelopment projects in 2003; created incentives in 2005 for businesses that add jobs with decent wages and health care benefits; and enacted a special tax break in 2007 for a developer who amassed large tracts of land in hopes of rebuilding an impoverished part of St. Louis.

Lawmakers also headed the call of Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon in a 2010 special session to pass millions of dollars of tax breaks for automakers, and they voted in 2011 to gradually eliminate the business franchise tax.

During the past decade, the number of state tax credits redeemed annually has more than doubled to nearly $630 million this past fiscal year ? and the tab could have been even higher. The Legislature in 2008 authorized $240 million of tax credits to lure a Canadian airplane maker to Kansas City. But the company rejected the deal.

Still, Republicans are not done reducing taxes. Their goals for the 2013 session include a broad state income-tax cut and a revision of the state's tax credits, which would cap some programs to free money for new incentives targeted at particular industries.

2. Government services. After 10 years of Republican budget writing spanning two separate economic downturns, Missouri is on track to spend almost the same amount of general revenues this year as it had budgeted in 2003. That has meant cuts to some programs to offset rising costs elsewhere.

The most notable Republican cut came in 2005, when Gov. Matt Blunt enacted measures eliminating Medicaid health care coverage for about 100,000 low-income adults and reducing benefits for hundreds of thousands of others. Republicans have called it a forward-thinking cut that helped balanced the budget when the Great Recession hit. Though the number of people on federally funded food stamps has continued to rise, Missouri's Medicaid rolls remain below their pre-2005 levels. There also are fewer Missourians receiving subsidized child care and cash welfare payments.

Despite escalating enrollments, the amount of money Missouri provides to public universities remains essentially the same as it was when Republicans took control of the Legislature. That's due partly to cuts by Democratic governors who turned to higher education to help balance the budget.

Basic aid to K-12 schools has risen to an all-time high, yet it remains hundreds of millions of dollars short of the amount called for under a 2005 law that rewrote the school funding formula.

3. Social policy. The Republican-led Legislature has enacted a variety of new restrictions on abortion clinics, including a 24-hour waiting period after a woman consults with a physician. It placed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage on the 2004 ballot, which voters overwhelmingly approved. And it imposed new limitations on sexually oriented businesses.

Other social policy changes approved by the Legislature include numerous attempts to crack down on methamphetamine by limiting access to cold medications used to make it; revamping the state's foster care system and nursing home laws; toughening penalties for sex offenders; and providing a boost to the state's corn farmers by requiring gasoline to contain a 10 percent ethanol mix.

As one of its first actions as the majority, Republicans teamed up with some minority party Democrats in 2003 to enact a law allowing trained adults to carry concealed guns. That issue could be back with a new twist in 2013, as House Republican leaders now want to allow teachers and administrators to carry their concealed guns into classrooms.

[All iPads] Do you 'manage' your iPad Apps that are open?

What I mean is, do you spend much time going in and killing apps that you've recently used? I was with iPhone from the very start but in the last year or so I've been pretty fully dedicated with Android. I always made it a point to back out of apps so they'd close down when I was done using them.

I know that both iOS and Android do a pretty good job about killing processes as needed but I tried to manage it myself if I can. I never used things like Task Killers but I'd do what I could on my end.

But as it stands, I'm getting tired of worrying about that crap, lol. I just got my iPad 4th Gen and wondered if I should be perfectly fine with ZERO concern about all the apps running in the multitasking bar.

From ?eat, drink & be vegan?

9. Mini-Burgers. Take a favorite burger recipe, and make mini-patties, for sliders, or for dipping. Try Mediterranean Bean Burgers from LTEV, Nutty Veggie Burgers, or these?Mushroom Pecan Burgers.

8. Chickpea Salad Rolls. These are fresh and fast, and the salad mixture is a little like a mock tuna salad, but far lighter without vegan mayo. ?Roll in leafy greens like chard or romaine leaves (or collards, they are a little more assertive in flavor, so depends on your guests), or make into small sandwiches.

7. Moroccan Bean Stew. If you are having a cozy, homey New Year?s Eve and want a soup, this is one of my favorites. It is special and elegant enough to serve to guests, and is also delicious paired with breads with the Truffled Cashew Cheese from LTEV.

6. Vegveeta Dip. I need to say little other than ? YUMMY! :D ?Mix in a few spoonfuls of salsa, and serve up with tortilla chips. Easy as that.

5. Cannellini Bean Sweet Potato Hummus. What?s a party without hummus? ?Skip the traditional puree and try this sweet and smoky version.

4. Kale Slaw. ?Even less adventurous foodie guests will enjoy this salad because the dressing coats the ingredients so scrumptiously! ?The 3-Bean salad pictured would also be a great potluck salad ? so simple you could throw it together last minute!

From ?Let Them Eat Vegan?

3. Jerk Chickpeas. ?Add some kick to your night! ?Double this recipe, have it potluck style with tortillas, rice, and avocado ? you?re set!

Jerk Chickpeas

2. Creamy Cashew Dip.?Most folks are little tired of sugar-laden cookies at this point in the holidays. Why not try Creamy Cashew Dip with fresh fruit.

1. Frosted Brawnies. ?While folks are tired of cookies, I don?t think you ever tire of the brawnies! ?Or the Banana Nut Squares with Cream Cheese Frosting (also pictured) ? I just made them for a get-together this evening!

These are all very ?omni-friendly? recipes too. ?I usually do not choose tofu or tempeh-based recipes when serving to guests, just to keep things more familiar. ?Here, you simply have really good food ? made with really good ingredients.

Wishing you a blessed and Plant-Powered New Year! ?And, of course much fun for your NYs Eve parties. ?

What favorite dishes are you making to ring in 2013??
