Mountaineering here in the Philippines | Pinoy Recreation

One of the more popular recreational activities here in the Philippines is mountain climbing or mountaineering. Due to its increasing popularity, the number of mountaineers all over the country significantly increased over the past years primarily because of the thrill and the scenic view from the top of the summit. Though the equipments and apparel are a bit expensive, mountaineering is somewhat a cheap activity as compared to other recreational activities especially if you are trekking on a mountain near your region. Nonetheless, it brings a different kind of thrill as compared to its water sport counterpart from which most Filipinos are a lot more accustomed of doing.

Mountaineering?or?mountain climbing?on the strictest sense is the sport,?hobby?or?profession?of?hiking,?skiing, and?climbing?mountains. While mountaineering began as attempts to reach the highest point of unclimbed big mountains it has branched into specializations that address different aspects of the mountain and consists of three areas: rock-craft, snow-craft and skiing, depending on whether the route chosen is over rock,?snow?or?ice. All require experience, athletic ability, and technical knowledge to maintain safety.

Unfortunately here in the Philippines, we don?t experience winter season making it unlikely to have a snow-craft or even skiing. The good thing is, our country is blessed to have a bunch of mountains from Luzon to Mindanao, giving recreationist and mountaineers a number of mountains to choose from depending on the needs of the group you?re joining in.

For your reference, here is the top 10 highest mountains in the Philippines according to PinoyMountaineer:
